Presentation to inform public

Cardboard tombstones were scattered throughout the Atwood Mall this week as part of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship’s promotion of the group’s presentation, “Love and Death” scheduled today.

“Love and Death” is the first event put on by the IVFC that included a week-long campaign beforehand to let people know it was going on.

The “tombstones” were only one of the publicity stunts implemented by the group to attract students and faculty to the event. Students were flooded with a barrage of intriguing, yet sometimes misleading images hinting at what the event could be about. Flyers with the image of a lone gravestone, which read “R.I.P.,” suggested the presentation would be primarily about death, while a pick-up truck blaring Sinatra parked in the middle of the Atwood Mall with a “Just Married” sign dangling off the bumper, suggested it would be about love and/or marriage.

But, in the end, the event ended up being about neither.

“It’s just going to be a presentation about Jesus Christ’s death,” said SCSU junior Erica Dirks. “The event is about Jesus’ death and how God loved us so much that he sent his son Jesus to die for our sins.”

The Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) is an inter-denominational Christian group. The Outreach group of the IVCF is responsible for putting out the signs and for the other promotions on campus. The mission of the Outreach branch is to minister to fellow students on campus.

The scale of this presentation is the first of its kind for the group, and according to Dirks, it is meant to “take a step out of our comfort zone.”

According to Dirks, the presentation of “Love and Death” will open with a band and will feature a “Celebrity Death Match” between Cupid and the Grim Reaper. The evening will conclude with a speaker and testimonials.

“It’s going to be awesome,” said SCSU senior Matthew Contons.

In a final push to make people aware of the presentation, “Cupid” and the “Grim Reaper” will be handing out flyers and letting people know about the event.
