Registration begins

Changes to the SCSU Web site offer students a more colorful

As fall semester is coming to a close, spring semester registration is just opening up.

Registration kicked off at 7:45 a.m. Monday, and will continue until Dec. 12 at 5 p.m.

Students can register for classes either online or over the phone. While some prefer to register over the phone, most do so via the Internet.

Changes made to the SCSU Office of Records and Registration registration Web page will greet students when they register. Featuring a new style and feel, the online registration and student information system is intended to be more user friendly. Each page of the newly improved site includes a “menu tab” for smooth navigation through the site.

For those forgetful students who can’t seem to remember their tech ID number, the “Lookup” tab may provide some help. By entering a social security number and pin number, students can retrieve their tech ID number.

After completing the login process, students can choose their selected year and term by clicking on the hyperlink near the top of the screen. From this link, several different years and terms will be available for appropriate selection.

Located in the upper right hand corner of each page, log-out and contact hyperlinks also are available. The contact link provides students a chance to e-mail a question or comment to the Office of Records and Registration Helpdesk.

A new registration tab features student access to searches for open sections, registration, view/modify class schedule, check holdings and advisor access codes.

Clicking the “Student” tab provides access for checking one’s term grades, updated unofficial transcript, personal contact information, personal account information and financial aid status.

The Minnesota State College and Universities (MnSCU) Web Development Department prompted the changes made to the SCSU registration Web site, with the intent to improve its efficiency, appearance and navigation. The changes were determined by a number of student and faculty members within the MnSCU system.

Although changes to the registration Web site were made for the sake of improvement, opinion varies on its new performance.

“We welcome constructive feedback and suggestions,” said Director of Records and Registration, Sue Bayerl. “(I think) students like the ability to change their local and permanent address online. They also appreciate having access to their unofficial transcript.”

Several criticisms have also arisen since registration began on Monday.

“The new Web site is more colorful and has a lot more options,” said sophomore biology technology major Sasha Marine. “It also seems more daunting and if you’re not familiar with the system, you don’t know where to click in order to get to where you want to go.”

Although the new site has generated some controversy, most complaints so far have involved students getting used to the site’s new design. Most returning students felt comfortable with the old registration page. Students find the alternating Web site design hard to deal with and navigate through.

“I don’t like the fact that (MnSCU/SCSU Office of Records and Registration) keep changing the layout of the Web page,” said fourth year marketing major and Office of Records and Registration work study employee Kayla Nelson. “Every time I get used to one layout, they wind up changing it again.”
