Gas pump explosion burns one man Jeffrey Leroy Malikowski, 44, is in critical condition after his van was struck while at a gas pump Friday.
Malikowski was transferred by air ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center’s burn unit after he was pinned between the gas pump and his van at an East Side Little Dukes. Malikowski was filling his van at about 5:15 p.m. when a pickup, driven by Jason Thomas Schindler, 29, crashed into Malikowski’s van and knocked down the pump, triggering what witnesses called a fireball.
Police said they believe Schindler had a seizure while driving, which caused him to lose control and drive into the pump. Officials are still determining whether any other crimes were committed. Schindler was treated and released.
Pilot for Wellstone had lack of sleep The National Transportation Safety Board, investigating the plane crash that killed Sen. Paul Wellstone, have found that the captain of the aircraft, Richard Conry, 55, had worked a late-night nursing shift on top of an unexpected flight assignment.
The investigation found that Conry had worked a four-hour nursing shift the night before that had ended somewhere between 9 and 10 p.m. Earlier that day Conry worked a 3-9:30 a.m. flight round trip between St. Paul and Bismark, N.D. Conry was working in nursing as he was rejected as a part-time pilot at Aviation Charter of Eden Prairie in fall 2000 and later was hired in April of 2001. His lack of sleep is important as one third of all fatal transportation accidents are due to fatigue.
