215 dead in riots over beauty contest
The death toll in Nigeria has risen to at least 215 after violence erupted Saturday over the Miss World pageant being held in the primarily Muslim country.

The violence, mainly in the city of Kudana and some in the capital of Abuja, was sparked by a newspaper article that suggested that the prophet Muhammad, the founding prophet of Islam, would have taken one of the beauty contestants as a wife.

So far, a policeman and a soldier have been arrested for allegedly dragging 15 Muslim men from their homes and killing them before putting them in a river. There are also several more allegations of police gunning down dozens of civilians.

It is believed that at least 500 people were injured and another 4,500 are without homes in Kaduna. At least 22 churches and eight mosques were also destroyed by the riots. The pageant was moved to London after the fighting began.

Ohio State’s victory prompts riots
At least a dozen fires were set and 45 people arrested Sunday for disorderly conduct and alcohol violations after Ohio State University’s victory over Michigan. The game sealed the 13-0 season for the Buckeyes and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl this year.

Fans stormed the field and threw chunks of turf at state troopers who used pepper spray to prevent the removal of goal posts. A number of cars were set on fire and pelted with random bits of debris from the fans.

There were other football celebrations that got out of hand across the nation Sunday as well, including the games in South Carolina, North Carolina, Washington and California. At Washington State University, fans pelted fans from the visiting team with bottles, plastic souvenirs and other debris. No one was seriously injured.
