The Husky wrestlers traveled to Omaha, Neb., for the Ryan Kaufman Open Saturday. Over 600 wrestlers and 34 teams were represented at the tournament. The top teams from Divisions I, II and III were all there.
The Huskies top wrestler, Dustin Darveaux, was the top finisher for the Huskies. Darveaux worked his way through the consolation bracket to finish in third place. He had four victories this weekend and is now only 10 away from the SCSU all-time victory mark.
During Darveaux’s path to the third place championship, he had to defeat two wrestlers from Division I powerhouse Oklahoma State University. He beat Will Gruenwald (9-5) in the consolation semifinals to reach the third place championship match.
The third place championship match pitted Darveaux against Mike Christian, Oklahoma State’s other heavyweight. Darveaux was the winner (5-3) of the hard-fought match.
Darveaux’s other two victories came against Jon Madsen (University of Mary) 6-2, and Brad Steele (University of Wyoming) 5-2. His one loss came against Kellen Fluckiger, 5-4 (Arizona State University).
Other Huskies advancing to the championship brackets were: Mike Amsden (141 pounds), Blake Christopherson (149 pounds), Scott Huckell (174 pounds) and Gerad Evans (184 pounds).
Amsden, a Husky freshman, was pinned by Andy Everson (South Dakota State University) 3:21 into the second round and was also pinned by Dana Vote (Iowa Central) in 4:08.
Christopherson lost in the first round to Jarod Webster (Chadron State University) 7-5 and was pinned in the consolation round by Allyn Quibble (Iowa Central) in 3:04.
At the 174-pound weight level, Scott Huckell was pinned in the third round by Aaron Meister (Labette University) in 3:57 and then was defeated by Nick Dewey (Central Oklahoma) 5-2 in the consolation fifth round.
Gerard Evans won his first round matchup with Jesse Sydebothem (Nesho Community College) 8-2, then was sent to the consolation bracket where he lost in the quarterfinals to Matt Herman, (North Dakota State University) 6-5. In the sixth round of the consolation bracket, Evans defeated Sam Wendland (University of Wyoming) 9-8. In the consolation quarterfinals, Evans was defeated by Wyatt Reyerson (Luther College) 14-2.
Overall the Huskies had a nice showing at the Ryan Kaufman Open. They showed the rest of the nation that SCSU is a Division II team to be reckoned with, showing promise for the upcoming season.
