Standards of judgment unclear, SCSU funds suffer
Due to the settlement concerning anti-Semitism, many issues regarding judgment have arisen.
There has recently been alleged discrimination permeating throughout the university. A group of faculty and a student came together and brought a lawsuit against the university based on anti-Semitic behavior.
But what is "anti-Semitic behavior" anyway? It seems fairly obvious that it is simply discrimination against Jews, but once a lawsuit is filed, the definition becomes a bit muddled.
At what point do anti-Semitic behaviors become frequent and/or severe enough to take disciplinary or legal action?
The university needs to create a proper definition to prevent millions of dollars from being taken from its already-suffering funds. It's hard for the community to know the bounds of judgment when it's not properly defined, and therefore cannot be properly acted upon.
Certainly, we don't mean to say that the lawsuit was unnecessary or not a good opportunity for improvement, but action other than financial settlements need to be made if we want to see improvements in the community.
Indeed, awareness needs to be increased and discrimination needs to be absolved. But there are so many other ways to solve such sensitive cases other than financial reparations.
We can't sue someone every time feelings are hurt or injustice was present; no amount of money can pay for all the negative emotions experienced. We can no longer focus solely on financially mending all injustices suffered.
The community needs to be brought together in some way to understand one another, peacefully express frustrations and not only encourage, but extend the positive behaviors that are existent.
This lawsuit may have settled some injustices but it also cleared a pathway for future lawsuits that are virtually undefinable. Lawsuits can sometimes create more segregation. What we really need is to work together, less expensively, to make a better community that understands one another.
