United Airlines plans on Chapter 11
United Airlines plans to file for federal bankruptcy court protection today. The Chapter 11 filing will be the largest airline bankruptcy in U.S. history, as well as one of the nation's largest bankruptcies ever.

This filing will put a federal judge in charge of overseeing the tangled financial affairs of United. According to sources, the airline owes nearly $1 billion in overdue debt payments, all of which would use up most of their remaining cash.

United has been unable to put a stop to more than two years of swelling losses. Last week they were rejected in a plea for a federal loan guarantee. The airline has pledged to keep flying under Chapter 11.

Cell phones, pagers banned at WSU
Next semester cell phones will no longer be allowed in classrooms at Wichita State University, Kan.

Don Beggs, WSU's president, signed a policy that bans the use of cell phones and pagers while classes are in session, effective next semester. Robert Kindrick, vice-president for academic affairs and research, had received complaints last year from students about cell phones and pagers disrupting their classes.

If a student violates the policy, individual instructors will decide the consequences which includes being asked to leave or just to turn it off.

The faculty will also have the authority to approve exceptions under special circumstances, such as an impending birth or a family emergency.
