It was a battle of the dogs this weekend as the SCSU women's hockey team took on the No. 2 nationally ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.
But the weekend was anything but a dog fight as the Bulldogs took a hearty bite out of the Huskies, besting SCSU 11-1 and 8-2 in a two game sweep. The weekend turned into what could probably be considered the Jenny Potter and the Erika Holst show, as the Bulldog junior and senior forwards shelled the Huskies for 19 points combined in the two-game sweep.
Saturday night's game began with a bang as UMD got on the board first when Tricia Guest scored on a power play at the 2:22 mark. Potter would tally her first point of the weekend getting credited with the assist. Krist McArthur also assisted on the play. The Huskies hung tough, answering back with a goal from junior forward Roxy Stang at the 7:18 mark.
Sophomore defenseman Tina Cirualo assisted on the play. UMD tallied their second goal of the period and the eventual game-winner on a five on three power play when Joanne Eustace pumped one in it at 15:32. Navada Russell and Caroline Ouellette were credited with assists. Guest would end the first period the same way she started it, scoring a third UMD goal at 18:26. McArthur and Potter assisted on the second power play goal of the night.
The second and third periods would belong to UMD as the 'dogs rifled in eight unanswered goals. Holst got things rolling in the second, putting UMD up 4-1 at the 1:03 mark. She was assisted by Eustace and Hanne Sikio. Guest would gain a hat trick on the night scoring UMD's fifth goal with 4:30 left in the second. Potter would add her third point of the night getting credited with the assist. Nora Tallus would also receive credit for the assist. Holst would also end the period where she began scoring the final goal of the second period. Ouellette and Kristina Petrovskaia were given points for the assist.
But the night was not yet over for UMD. Potter still had some of her own magic left when she began the third period, scoring the Bulldogs seventh goal of the night. Potter would then assist Holst at the 8:33 mark to put the WCHA leaders on top 8-1. Ouellette would score a ninth goal and also her third point of the night, scoring with 9:30 left in the period.
Eustace returned the favor from earlier in the night, receiving credit with the help. But Holst and Potter weren't done yet as Holst, assisted by Potter and Sikio, added a tenth goal at the 15:35 mark. With 2:56 left in the third, Potter ended all UMD scoring with her second goal of the night. Russell and Tallus assisted on the goal. Guest, Holst and Potter would combine for 14 of the Bulldogs 29 points in Saturday's game. SCSU's Brie Anderson gained the loss but not before stopping 41 of the 52 shots she faced from UMD on the night.
Sunday's game seemed like an upset was brewing on the Husky radars as the Huskies played the 'dogs tough in the first period. But it was UMD that got things rolling 1:28 into the first period, when Swedish Olympian Holst gained her fourth point of the weekend setting up Ouellette to put the 'dogs up 1-0.
The Huskies struck back with an answer of their own a minute later when Stang lit the lamp for her third goal of the season. Cirualo was credited with the assist on the power play goal. The Huskies would take the lead from UMD when freshman standout Ashley Stewart put the biscuit in the basket at the 8:37 mark. Standout transfer Carrie Holldorf and co-goals scored leader Melanie Pudsey assisted on the play. UMD would answer with a power play goal of their own when Potter picked up where she left off the previous night tallying her eighth point of the weekend tying the game at two apiece with six minutes left in the first. The first period would stay tied as both teams went into the locker room deadlocked at two. The second period began the Potter show, as the two-time U.S. Olympian pumped in three goals of her own. Potter would put the Bulldogs back on top, scoring 2:50 into the period. Holst and Sikio were credited with the assist on play. Potter would gain a hat trick on the day scoring on a power play at the nine minute mark. Sikio and Holst assisted on the play. Holst would score on her own 57 seconds later, putting the 'dogs up 5-2. Ouellette and Petrovskaia assisted. Much to the chagrin of SCSU women's hockey fans everywhere, Potter still had more magic up her sleeve. She would end all second period scoring with a goal at the 8:54 mark to put the Bulldogs up by four goals. Jenny Hempel assisted on the play.
The third period began and Potter and Hempel picked up where they left off, as Hempel again assisted Potter on her fifth goal of the afternoon matinee. Potter would end all scoring with 57 seconds left, scoring her sixth goal of the game and her twelfth point on the weekend, cementing an 8-2 win for the nationally ranked Bulldogs. Tallus and Guest would gain points for assists on the play. Junior goaltender Ellen Brinkman started her first game of the season stopping 46 of 54 shots on the day. With the two losses, the Huskies drop to 3-9 in the WCHA and 3-12 overall.
