Senior Dustin Darveaux and the rest of the Husky wrestlers traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday for the University of Northern Iowa Open. The UNI Open hosted more than 300 of the top wrestlers from Division I, II, and III.
Darveaux took home a first-place championship in the heavyweight division and his teammates represented SCSU with a fine effort at the top quality tournament. Darveaux pinned A.J. Rinaldi (Dana College) at 1:24 in the first-round and then defeated Aaron Keough 8-2 in the second round.
In the quarterfinals, Darveaux defeated Nathan McClain (North Eastern) 13-6. In the semi-finals he faced off against Roger Miller (Lindenwood University) and shutout Miller 4-0.
In a hard-fought championship, match Darveaux defeated Les Sigman (University of Nebraska-Omaha) 6-4. The five victories for Darveaux, ranked 2nd in the nation
(D-II), move him to within four victories of tying for the Huskies all-time victory leader.
If Darveaux advances to the championship match next week at the SCSU Invitational he will be able to have the opportunity to set the all-time mark in front of the hometown crowd.
Matt Neumeller was the other Husky to advance to the placement rounds at the tournament this weekend. He made his way to the fifth-place championship match at 165 pounds by way of the consolation bracket.
Neumeller lost his opening round match against number-one ranked Drew Kelly (University of Northern Iowa) 8-3. Then Neumeller went on to win his next seven matches in the consolation bracket to advance to the fifth-place match.
The fifth-place championship match placed Neumeller up against Matt Veach (Eastern Illinois). He lost a heartbreaker 6-4 to Veach.
The UNI tournament was a good warm-up for the Huskies who hope to defend their home mat this weekend at the SCSU Invitational. Look for Darveaux to inch his way closer to the Huskies all-time victories mark and possibly break the record.
