Fest offers cool activities
It was a cold morning Saturday with the sun beaming and the snow quite sparse; the runners and walkers gathered wearing an array of winter clothing, each with the anticipation of winning, or at least participating in, an activity for many to enjoy.
The activity was the fifth annual Snowshoe Race and Stroll, which began as a way for Campus Recreation's fitness coordinator Chris Haukos to try snowshoeing.
The race has been a successful activity ever since and draws participants from various Minnesota cities such as Duluth and Bemidji.
"It's a nice opportunity for people (who want to try snowshoeing, or to get outside and be active)," Haukos said.
Fortunately, generous places such as Out-N-About Gear and St. John's University have let Campus Recreation borrow their snowshoes so participants can use them for this purpose.
Over the past five years, SCSU has acquired 30 pairs of snowshoes, compared to the meager six with which they began.
Unfortunately, the attendance of the race and stroll did not go exactly as expected. This was the first race to take place without snow and it was quite evident in the turnout.
"We usually have over 100 participants, but (this year) we have only under 40," Haukos said.
However, those who attended the event stayed positive about the festivity.
"It's going to go (well) considering the fact that there's no snow (and runners are still excited)," said certified massage therapist and SCSU freshman Brittina Seaborg.
Participants, both veteran and beginners, enjoyed themselves regardless of the lack of snow on the ground.
Prior to the race, Haukos called a meeting to begin the race. She called to everyone's attention the fact that the race was 3.1 miles (which was accurately marked with a wheel) and the track was accurately marked.
After the race, fatigued racers retrieved energy with refreshments and massages, complimentary of Campus Recreation and their sponsors.
Participants were generally enthused about the race before and after the event took place. With some fatigued and others just plain satisfied, racing and strolling is something many have enjoyed in the past and will continue to enjoy in the future.
"My daughter's boyfriend's sisters participate in this event (and encouraged me to participate)," said runner Marylou Quistorff.
Quistorff's goal is to run everyday for five consecutive years without missing a day.
Quistorff, to this day, hasn't missed one day, and she is about to embark upon her fifth year soon.
"You just feel better after you (run)," Quistorff said.
Another participant began because he was interested in snowshoeing. When it comes down to it, most participants just like to get out and be active, which is something that Campus Recreation strongly encourages.
"I don't really like racing, per se, I just like running," said participant Jake Krohn.
"Don't think of it as racing; just go out and enjoy yourself. It' the most important thing."
