Atwood recreation center provides birthday alternative

Limited funds presents "No problem" to Ed Bouffard, Assistant Director for the Atwood Recreation Center. Bouffard has prepared a series of special offers and promotions designed for groups interested in bowling, billiards and a barrage of other fun activities.

For groups planning a birthday party the Rec Center offers up to three bowling lanes (shoes included), as well as a custom-made 14 sheet birthday cake for $31. The party planners can decorate the room as well, if they desire. The group can also add two large one-topping pizzas and 10 cans of soda for an additional $17.

If that sounds too pricey, groups interested solely in bowling can get up to three lanes with shoes for a mere $21. As with the birthday promotion, bowlers can add two pizzas and 10 sodas for the same $17. A third pizza can be added to any promotion for $9.

These group rates should appeal to strapped-for-cash college students who have trouble affording the regular $1.50 per game (which is a dollar less than the general public pays).

An added incentive to using the Rec Center's facilities is that it helps to offset student activity fees.

"Every game you play helps a little," Bouffard said. "The more business we get, the lower student prices will be in the future."

Bouffard says that the Rec Center hosts an average of two birthday parties a week, which includes non-students. Parties are regularly thrown for fun-seekers that run the gamut from small children to adults. This is due to the fact that the Rec Center strives to be a family environment as well as a college hangout.

"The only bowling facility in the area you'll find with a no smoking or drinking policy is the Atwood Rec Center," said Linda Bischoff, promotional planner for Granite Bowl. The policy is a particular point of pride for the Rec Center. While other local bowling alleys may offer similar group rates, they find themselves less attractive to those trying to avoid a bar-type atmosphere.

Also, because Atwood lacks the extensive league play found at most bowling alleys, parties are welcome seven days a week. The only restriction is that they must end at 7 p.m. to avoid congestion on the lanes during peak hours.

Each party package is for one hour of bowling, but an additional half hour may be added for $10. Up to five bowlers are allowed on a lane, with an additional lane available for $7.

Once the bowling is done, there's still fun to be had. Party-goers can check out the Rec Center's various other games, such as billiards, table tennis and foosball. There is also a wide assortment of video games and pinball machines to choose from.
