Six Strings and Vinyl, consisting of Fran Snyder, left, and Dj MVP, played for the lunch crowd Wednesday during Live at Lunch. The University Program Boards Center Stage Committee hosted the event.

Six Strings and Vinyl performed in the Quarry Wednesday as part of "Live at Lunch," sponsored by University Program Board.

The duo from Atlanta, Ga. stopped at SCSU as part of a two week tour, promoting their self-titled mini CD. The band consists of only two members: Fran Snyder plays acoustic guitar, and his accomplice DJ MVP spins records, scratches, and raps. The combination of DJ and guitar creates a unique blend of acoustic hip-hop without the necessity of an entire band to create a rich, full sound.

Fran Snyder has been a solo acoustic act for the past 10 years, but recently noticed that a majority of the acoustic acts he heard on local campuses and competitions sounded similar to each other.

At the local music store where they both worked, he asked fellow employee DJ MVP to collaborate, in an effort to spice up his traditional acoustic music. DJ MVP had been spinning since the age of 14, and they would often see each other at competitions. Upon joining forces last May, the duo's unique blend has resulted in a totally different form of music. Their motto is: "words for your mind, music for your soul and beats for your booty!"

Brought by UPB's Center Stage and Literary Arts Committees, the duo played a variety of music including Dave Matthews Band covers, original music from the upcoming album and music from Snyders' solo albums, "Stir" and "Someone is Watching." Between songs they would freestyle and joke with the crowd, especially about Snyders' musical past. "Fran was playing music a long, long, long time before I ever got involved," DJ MVP said.

Six Strings and Vinyl are currently on tour playing in major cities such as Chicago, Cleveland and Philadelphia before stopping in St. Cloud. Next, the duo is heading for Kansas City and Tennessee, before returning home to work on a full album, which is scheduled for a March/April release. "Six Strings" has also planned a small February tour, and anticipates a larger tour with more exposure to come after the album's release.

DJ MVP expects that they will be returning to St. Cloud sometime soon. "Although we don't have anything planned out, it sounded like you guys really liked us, so we'll definitely be coming back."

Snyder also has DJ Lord of Public Enemy participate in some guest scratching on a few songs, which will appear on the band's official website.
