James Apollo Trio to perform live, entertain
While channel surfing on Monday nights, students can enjoy the music of live bands in the comfort of their own homes.
This is made possible by KVSC's program, Monday Night Live. This program began over a decade ago and hasn't missed a Monday since.
Every Monday at 10:00 p.m., Monday Night Live features different genres of music, ranging from bluegrass to hip-hop to orchestral rock. This week's featured group hails from our neck of the woods, Minneapolis, Minn. The James Apollo Trio will be performing an hour-long set and interviews with the band are included.
James Apollo was born in Libertyville, Ark. but his family soon moved to Minneapolis. In Minnesota, Apollo was surrounded by a unique musical atmosphere and exposed to the likes of Prince, Bob Dylan and Replacements.
The influence music had on his growing up is clear, considering at the age of seventeen, James Apollo and his band began touring all over the continental United States.
Apollo's voice is soulfully sweet and yet textured enough to resemble the rock 'n roll roots he grew up with and was inspired by. His lyrics cover a wide range of meaning from one song to the next.
"Sometimes he's your uncle, sometimes he's your old shoes, sometimes he's the guy in the back row," according to the James Apollo Web site, www.jamesapollo.com.
The band is described as "harnessing the power of punk and spontaneity of old rock 'n roll that produced Buddy Holly's glasses and Nancy Sinatra's sexual spunk," as stated in The Muse's Muse Magazine, February 2001.
To perform on Monday Night Live, The James Apollo Trio actually contacted KVSC themselves, instead of the other way around.
"James sent me a copy of the 'Sweet Unknown' along with a press kit, as any band can do that would like to appear on the program," said Kristi Kremers, employee at KVSC and one of the main coordinators of Monday Night Live.
True to their name, The James Apollo Trio, is made up of three people. James Apollo is the voice of the group along with playing guitar and harmonica. Noah Strom performs on drums and organ, and Alan Esperanza supplies the bass.
The group has three albums that fans can buy on the Web site. There are also a few tracks available to listen to"Sweet Unknown" is their most current album having been released in 2002. Their other albums are "Pull Down the Curtain" from 2001 and "Camilla" from 2000.
James Apollo currently resides in San Francisco, but will be traveling back to his home state Monday, for the Monday Night Live performance. Students can catch him at 10:00 p.m. either on the radio, KVSC 88.1, or on cable channels 7 or 21, depending on the cable provider.
Monday Night Live ventures into homes every Monday. If you miss The James Apollo Trio, there are more acts to follow in the up-coming weeks such as, Mahkato, The Soviettes and A Whisper In the Noise.
