Student Live at Lunch provides opportunities for local students
This Wednesday, the University Program Board will be hosting Student Live at Lunch in the Quarry from 11a.m.-1p.m, giving local students a chance to perform.
Student Live at Lunch will feature three acoustic acts. Jake Lacina will perform at 11a.m., followed by Neil Dressel at 11:45.
McKinley place, a trio consisting of Brian Shackle, Mike Krapp, and Patrick Gibbs, will be finishing the lunch performing at 12:30.
The first two acts are solo acoustic guitarists, and the trio features two guitars and two vocalists. The performers will be playing a variety of music, from cover songs to original music.
Student Live at Lunch started last year when homecoming provided a student showcase. The winners would then perform at the homecoming coronation.
The response was so well received that UPB decided to extend student showcases throughout the year, in order to show more local talent on campus.
According to Center Stage Coordinator Shelby Kitzmann, the committee is putting forth this effort for many good reasons.
"It's nice to offer a chance to let students see other local students perform," Kitzmann said.
To be a part of Live at Lunch is not difficult; random acts signed up after seeing advertisements scattered around campus. There are some requirements, though.
"Each act is given 30 minutes in length, and their music can't contain any derogatory or sexual comments," Kitzmann said.
Lewd lyrics and artist nudity are also not allowed, as well as any lyrics that would discriminate based on race, creed, or nationality. A $10 deposit is also required for security reasons.
There are no limitations to the type of act; a variety of entertainment is encouraged. Comedy, poetry, magic or any sort of entertainment is allowed, as long as it involves some form of talent.
There are two more Student Live at Lunches planned for this year, on March 5th and April 23rd. If these acts are successful, the UPB will then host Student Live at Lunches on a regular basis, giving students even more opportunity to play and be heard. The committee is still looking for student talent to fill both days.
Upcoming Live at Lunches feature Tamara Bedricky on Feb 5th, Blue Jupiter on March 26th, and Blu Sanders on April 9th. The Center Stage Committee will also be representing Tim Mahoney and Panoramic Blue when they perform live in the Ritsche Auditorium on Feb. 19th from 8- 11p.m.
