Mickow steps in as volleyball coach
New head coach hopes to continue Dianne Glowatzke's winning tradition.

Much like when Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire took over for Tom Kelly, new SCSU volleyball coach Patricia Mickow has a tough act to follow.
Mickow begins her coaching duties Monday and is taking over for SCSU's most successful coach in any sport, Dianne Glowatzke. Glowatzke spent 26 seasons as SCSU's head coach, amassing a 527-418 career record. When Mickow begins, she will become only the third coach in the program's history.
"Patricia will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff at St. Cloud State," SCSU Director of Athletics Morris Kurtz said. "She brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to our program and will help us build upon the tradition of excellence established by Dianne Glowatzke in her tenure at SCSU."
Kurtz isn't kidding about the wealth of collegiate coaching experience.
Mickow has 14 years of collegiate coaching experience, the latest of which was at Bemidji State University where she served as head coach for one season. While at BSU, Mickow doubled her team's conference win total from the previous season, and led the Beavers to an 11-17 overall record and 8-10 NSIC mark.
Mickow graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1986 and received a Masters in science degree from Winnona State in 1992. In addition to BSU, she has served as head coach at Mayville State University in 2000 and 2001, Mount Marty College (where she served as volleyball, basketball and softball coach) in Yankton, S.D., from 1988 to 1994 and again from 1996 to 2000 and one season at St. Mary's University (Winona) in 1994-95.
At SCSU, Mickow is taking over a program that has not had a winning season since 1998 and finished the 2002 season 4-21 overall and 1-15 in the NCC. Nevertheless, she is ready to attempt to turn around a program that has seen more losses than a stock trader during a depression.
"Fortunately, I've had some experience in taking over non-winning programs," Mickow said. "SCSU seems to have the best resources I have to work with that I've ever had. They seem to have put their best foot forward in trying to put together a successful program. By that I mean that there's nothing being held back as far as resources available."
Many of those resources will be used for recruiting a big part of what Mickow believes will turn the Huskies from the NCC version of the Cincinatti Bengals, to the New York Yankees.
"There's still athletes wanting to play for SCSU, but we're waiting for the coaching situation to be resolved," Mickow said. "Because this wasn't a late hire, we still have a chance to land some of them."
Mickow also emphasized that she is not planning on coming in and making any drastic changes to the program.
"If you think I'm going to come in and clean house, I'm not," she said. "I just hope to step in and take over. I will be very demanding of the athletes and I'm sure some changes will be made, but everyone will have an opportunity to adjust."
If Mickow has half the success Gardenhire had in taking over for Kelly, SCSU fans may have to adjust to a winning volleyball team.
Around the Net -SCSU junior setter and co-captain Kari Turkowski was selected to the 2002 All-NCC team. Turkowski led the team with 774 set assists and tallied 267 kills, 226 digs and 40 blocks. Turkowski now has 1,695 career digs, fifth best all-time at SCSU. -SCSU recently announced the signing of 5-foot-11 middle hitter RaeAnn Stanley to a letter of intent to play volleyball at SCSU in 2003. Stanley is from Alexandria and is a senior at Jefferson High School. She is a two-time varsity letter winner and has earned All-Conference honors.
