Nebraska-Omahas Blu Wahle(right) tries to take control of SCSUs Matt Nuemueller during the 165- pound match. Wahle fell in a 2-1 decision to Nuemueller. Nuemueller had SCSUs only win in the loss to UNO at Halenbeck Hall.
The SCSU grapplers got manhandled at Halenbeck Friday night. The Huskies (1-6, 0-2 NCC) faced No. 3 Nebraska-Omaha (4-1, 1-0 NCC), who fell one spot from No. 2 last week and were easily beaten 40-3. The lone victory of the night for the Huskies came from newly No. 1 ranked Matt Neumueller (165 pounds).
Neumueller scored a 2-1 decision over Blu Wahle after the Mavericks cruised through the first five weight classes. His victory wasn't enough to inspire the usually reliable upper weights. The Mavs rolled through the rest of the lineup after the Neumueller victory, including a big upset at heavyweight.
Stephen Clary (SCSU) was pinned in 1:45 by No. 6 Dan Hilario (UNO) at 125 pounds. In the 133 pound match Mitch Waite (UNO) scored an 11-4 decision over Derek Miller (SCSU). No. 4 Rodrick Ratcliff (UNO) earned a major decision victory over John Dirksen (SCSU) at 141 pounds to give the Mavs a 13-0 lead.
Christian Alt (UNO) then defeated Blake Christopherson (SCSU) by a 7-3 decision at 157 pounds and Nick Blanchard (UNO) gave the Mavs a perfect 5-0 start to the match after a 9-3 decision at 157 pounds over Dan Duch (SCSU).
Neumueller's victory at 165 pounds stopped the madness and gave hope to the Huskies who were only down 19-3 with the heart of their line-up still to come.
Neumueller lived up to the expectations and the pressure bestowed upon him last week when he was named the No. 1 wrestler nationally at 165 pounds. Earlier this week in an interview, Neumueller said he was excited about this season and the upcoming NCC and national tournaments.
"I feel like I'm back on track," he said. "Last year I didn't wrestle as well as I would have liked to and I was pretty disappointed. I'm excited about the rest of the season and the chance to be an All-American."
After Neumueller's victory, injury plagued All-American, No. 4 Jon Duncombe (SCSU), was upset by Dan Vech (UNO) 9-3 at 174 pounds. The Mavs didn't even wrestle No. 1 Bob Edmonds and Duncombe still couldn't overcome the injuries for a victory.
Due to all the injuries, the Huskies were forced to forfeit at 184 pounds and the match was sealed for the Mavs. Their other No. 1 ranked wrestler, Chad Wallace (UNO), pinned Luke Pohlmeier (SCSU) in 4:58, with the route almost complete.
Salt was added to the open wounds for SCSU when No. 2 Dustin Darveaux was upset by Dusty Hoffschneider at heavyweight 5-3. The loss was only the second for Darveaux (26-2) this season and was even more surprising than the final score of 40-3 Friday night.
A lot of questions are left to be answered for St. Cloud if they want to reach their optimistic goals set before the season. The dual matches are not important when it comes to the end of the season NCC and national tournaments, but they do raise and lower the confidence levels of the wrestlers. The Huskies confidence levels have to be sinking far below sea level after Friday night.
They have the potential, the experience and the coach to lead them to a Top-10 ranking, but ultimately it's up to the wrestlers to step it up as a team.
