Even though holiday break was a mere 17 days ago, students who are already desperate for another break, but don't have the patience to wait until March will be treated to "Snowdaze," a series of events taking place Feb. 2-7.
"Snowdaze," is a series of fun, exciting and provocative events presented by the different committees that constitute UPB. These events provide entertainment and a diversion from ordinary activities.
"I think it's something for students to come and do, kind of take a break between classes. It's just a way to participate and meet other people." Nikki Elston, program advisor for UPB, said.
The majority of these events are free, so penniless students will not be discouraged to participate in the fun.
Sunday starts out with a bang as the Concert Committee presents The Big Wu in the Atwood Ballroom at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Atwood Info Desk and the Electric Fetus for the price of $10 for students and $15 for the general public.
Sunday is also the last chance for students to take advantage of a free screening of "Monsoon Wedding," a romantic comedy set in present day Indian society and Punjabi culture. The film won top prize at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival, and the Director, Mira Nair, was nominated for an academy award for her 1988 film "Salaam Bombay!"
On Monday, Atwood Lounge will offer hot chocolate, cider and cookies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a spoken word performance by Chris Longoria at 7 p.m. in the Atwood Quarry. Longoria is a San Francisco native who has appeared on BET's Black Comedy Tour and PBS' Poetic Liaisons.
Tuesday's events will also take place in Atwood. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. "Snow Break" will offer caricatures, palm readings and temporary tattoos. Tarot card readings will also be available.
Later, National Events presents Martin Luther King III in the Atwood Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free with an SCSU ID, and $5 for faculty, staff and public. Tickets are available in the UPB office in Atwood (room 118) or at the Atwood Info Desk.
On Wednesday, Center Stage presents a live solo acoustic performance by Tamara Bedricky from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Atwood Quarry. According to her Web site, www.tamarabedricky.com, Bedricky was one of five finalists among 1,900 singer-songwriters in the 2002 Panteen Pro-V Pro-Voice competition, which showcases up-and-coming female musicians.
Later that evening, the Mississippi Music Fest presents the Battle of the Unsigned Bands in the Atwood Ballroom at 7 p.m. This event features five bands composed of SCSU students competing for the opening act slot on the upper stage at this year's Mississippi Music Fest, as well as 10 hours of recording time at Angel Beach Records. It is also a free event.
Enjoy an open skate session at the National Hockey Center from 12-1 p.m. Thursday. Later, another great opportunity is being offered at the Atwood Theatre at 7 p.m. when the controversial film, "Bowling for Columbine" by Michael Moore will be shown.
On Friday, students can take advantage of the recent snow by signing up for a ski trip to Powder Ridge. Sign up must be completed in the UPB office (Atwood 118) by 4 p.m. on Jan. 31. The $13 fee covers the lift ticket, ride to the mountain and equipment rental. The event will take place from 3-8 p.m. Snowboard rental will be $2 extra.
Students may find that the best way to resist boredom during the colder months is to join a committee.
"It gives the campus a taste of 'What the heck is UPB?' and it gives students a chance to see what they (committees) do," Elston said. "Maybe they'll want to join."
