Division III powerhouse Augsburg College defeated the SCSU grapplers on Tuesday night in Minneapolis 32-9.
Gaining victories for the Huskies were No. 1 Matt Neumueller (165 pounds), Luke Pohlmeier (197 pounds) and No. 2 Dustin Darveaux (heavyweight).
Neumueller (18-4) defeated Billy Morgan 4-2 in a close matchup. Neumueller extended his winning streak and looks to be on track for an All-American finish to his career at SCSU.
Pohlmeier (3-7) continued to show improvement as he defeated Joe Cullen 3-2 to give the Huskies the early 3-0 lead.
Next for the Huskies was Darveaux (29-2) as he scored a major decision over Mike Flanagan 12-2. The win gave SCSU four points and the early 7-0 lead.
Getting pinned for the Huskies was Stephen Clary (125 pounds), losing by major decision was John Dirksen (141 pounds) and losing by a technical fall was Blake Christopherson (149 pounds).
St. Cloud received a one point unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and had to forfeit two other matches (174 and 184 pounds). In the end it was too much for them to overcome.
SCSU faced off with Southwest State in a hard fought, injury-filled match Saturday night in Marshall. They lost the dual 28-22. The Huskies gained victories from the upper-weights and won by injury forfeit for a change, but it wasn't enough to get them the non-conference victory.
The match started at 174 pounds with Scott Huckell filling in for injured All-American Jon Duncombe. Huckell faced off with Drew Bouwman and lost by a technical fall at 2:50. That gave the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
SCSU was hurt by an injury in the next match. After forfeiting at 184 pounds, the Mavs went up 11-0. Then, the tides turned. Luke Pohlmeier won by major decision over Brian Tesch 14-4 at 197 pounds. The four points cut the lead to 11-4.
The four points turned into 10 points after Darveaux pinned Joel Wipperwurth at 1:01. He continued his dominance this season to bring his record to 27-2.
The Huskies lost the next two matches and the Mustangs went up 22-10. John Dirksen won by forfeit at 141 and SCSU was back in it at 22-16. SCSU then lost the next two matches at 149 and 157. Those victories gave SWSU a 28-16 lead, ensuring a victory with only one match to go.
Although the victory was already in hand, SCSU still had their No. 1 ranked wrestler left. Neumueller pinned Deverson Charles at 2:27. The six points gave St. Cloud 22 for the dual, six shy of the 28 the Mustangs put up. Neumueller hasn't lost since Dec. 7 and improved his record to 17-4.
