Man jailed for courtroom carving
A man waiting to appear before a judge on charges of receiving stolen property was thrown in jail after being caught carving his nickname into a court bench.

Deputy Sheriff Kenneth J. Seyfert Jr. said he spotted Eduardo Rivera, 43, carving his name in the back row of the courtroom Tuesday.

Berks County Judge Stephen B. Lieberman was notified and Rivera was handcuffed and removed from court until the end of the day, when he appeared before the judge.

Defense attorney Timothy A. Biltcliff asked Lieberman to delay Rivera's hearing on receiving stolen property and other charges related to a car break-in. A new hearing was scheduled for April 4.

Man ticketed for noisy American flag
A man who installed a 50-foot flag pole after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks was ticketed Monday after a neighbor said the flag's flapping made too much noise.

Ray Saelens said the sight and sound of an American flag whipping in the wind has special meaning.

But next-door neighbor, Mark Grucz, complained and said that the flapping of the flag bothered him, and police issued Saelens a warning.

Township police spokesman Jim Gates said the dispute was unprecedented, and the department had no choice but to issue a ticket when someone complains about noise.

Meanwhile, Saelens said he will fight to keep the flag flying.
