Expect great musical performances to come this spring, both from the University Program Board and from local sponsors in the St. Cloud area. Tim Mahoney, Panoramic Blue, Jars of Clay and Caedmon's Call will all be performing in the area this month.
Tim Mahoney and Panoramic Blue will be playing Feb. 19 in Ritsche Auditorium, with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. Panoramic Blue will be opening, playing from 8-9 p.m., and Mahoney will be headlining, performing from 9:30 to 11 p.m. Students receive two free tickets with their campus ID and tickets will cost $5 for the public.
Students will remember Panoramic Blue as the opening act for Sugar Ray last year. The band consists of singer/songwriters Matthew Johnson and JJ Towner, lead guitarist Lee Kelly, bassist Jeremy Sutter and newest member Mike Swanson as the drummer.
The local band mostly performs at bars and nightclubs downtown, and released its first full length album last year, entitled 'More Than Just a Lady.' The band has been together for a little over a year, playing over 100 shows during this time, and releasing a 7-track EP. They are hitting the college circuit this semester, with shows at Concordia College, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin-River Falls and University of St. Thomas.
Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Tim Mahoney will be making his first appearance at SCSU. Mahoney recently released his fourth album, entitled '3 Different Views.' His other albums include self-titled 'Tim Mahoney' in 1995, 'Now' in 1997 and 'Live' in 1998.
"I'm very fortunate that the Midwest is a place where artists can actually tour and make a living," Mahoney said, according to his Web site biography. "You can actually build a loyal fan base by playing and recording your music, and I'm fortunate to have been able to do that and not have to work side jobs. I feel really lucky because between selling records and touring, I have actually been able to build a business doing what I love."
Mahoney is playing all over the Midwest area, with shows in Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota and Kansas.
"These are two well-known bands that a lot of undergraduate students don't get to see since they play in bars most of the time," said Shelby Kitzmann, concert organizer and center stage coordinator for the UPB. "When listening to both bands, you can really feel the emotion in their lyrics."
Jars of Clay will be headlining with Caedmon's Call, playing at the Lighthouse in St. Joseph on Thursday, Feb. 20th at 7 p.m. The small concert, sponsored solely by Spirit 93, has tickets available for $18 at various locations, such as the Meeting Grounds and the New Life Christian Bookstore, as well as Spirit 93 studios and the Lighthouse ticket line, 320-363-0777. Tickets are going quickly, and will most likely not be available at the door.
Jars of Clay is composed of Dan Haseltine on lead vocals, Stephen Mason on guitar and Matt Odmark on acoustic and electric guitar. They are well-known for their dual success on both Christian Rock and Contemporary Hit charts, and their hits "Flood," "Fly" and "I Need You" have helped to maintain their popularity. Their album 'The Eleventh Hour,' released in 2002, has been nominated for both Grammy and Dove awards.
Caedmon's Call, made up of Garett Buell on percussion, Jeff Miller on bass, Derek Webb on lead vocals and guitar, Todd Bragg on drums, Danielle Young on lead vocals, Cliff Young on lead vocals and guitar and Josh Moore on accordion and harmonica, will be opening the event.
They have been described as "power acoustic," and the seven-member band has had hits such as 'Before There Was Time,' 'We Delight' and 'Who You Are.' Their newest project, which was released Feb. 4th, is called 'In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship.'
"It's a delight to bring two such acts into our area," said Spirit 93 manager Andy Hilger. "Jars of Clay and Caedmon's Call represent Spirit 93's music selection well, and their lives show the positive Christian values the station is built on. It's highly unusual to be able to present acts of this stature in such an intimate setting as the Lighthouse."
"This is a smaller venue than they're used to playing, although there are no bad seats," said Steve Koranda, also from Spirit 93. "It'll be a real good night, we're just hoping for good weather to come with it."
