Students need to be involved if they are going to complain
Published:
Thursday, February 13, 2003
Student lobby day was a day for students to be involved with their government, voice their opinions and know where they stand with issues that face them everyday.
One of the most prominent issues facing students right now is the financial situation. Unfortunately, tuition might be going up again. Tuesday, cuts for the next two years will be decided by Gov. Pawlenty.
Students wander down the hallways, stroll down the streets and sleep in the beds of their dorms wondering if and complaining about how much more money the place from which they get their college education and experience is going to cost them.
Most of us have to have at least a part-time job or more, in order to pay for steep tuition raises. This has the power to affect and/or jeopardize academia, sleeping habits, time alone and time with friends or family members.
That is just one of the countless gripes that come from students' mouths every day. If we are so concerned, though, about what is happening to our campus, then why aren't more of us involved?
If we all hate what is happening, we need to go out and see that things change. More of us should go to days like lobby day. More students should get in contact with student government so they know that they are being properly represented and that their voice is being heard.
If change is in dire need of instigation, do not just complain that it isn't changing; go out and do something about it.
When voting time comes around, we can all get involved and know that we at least contributed to decisions made.
We can all know that at least our opinion was voiced, so when we have issues like tuition raising we can know that we at least took part in fighting such travesties.
None of this is news. It should be simple math that if people are immobile, nothing is going to happen. If we want tuition to stop rising, then talk about it. If people want things to change, we have to do something to mediate such change.
