Opinions imperative to societal existence, everyday operations
Published:
Monday, February 17, 2003
When we sit down to write the editorial every issue, all that can really be hashed out is opinions and viewpoints before a final decision can be made on what we should write.
Ironically enough, the issue at hand is opinions. We were faced thinking about and forming opinions about people having or not having opinions when it comes to voting, especially concerning the younger voting crowd.
The obvious consensus was that having opinions is really the only way to be an individual. The viewpoints of people are what make up society; it's how we got our president; it's how we get up every day; it's even how we converse with one another.
How could one claim individuality without having a stance in this country? How could one get up every day, converse with people and claim to be a member of a society when they don't even know how or why they are able to exist in this society?
However, it is true that survival and existence is more than possible without a political stance. But just because something is possible doesn't mean that it is right.
People should take enough interest in their country and their society to at least have an opinion. There must be reasoning behind action, which is what having opinions and viewpoints is all about.
Possessing some stance is strongly suggested, because without any stance, this country cannot even operate normally.
Without all the people who actually go out and vote, this country might have a different leader. Whatever opinion that may inspire is a good one, because at least action is on its way to being taken. Whether one supports or rejects what is happening in their country, at least participation is taking place.
At least individuality can be rightfully claimed. At least we can get up in the morning knowing where we are politically and why we face such issues like going to war.
At least opinions can be hashed and stances taken when it comes time to write an editorial for an important publication.
