Sweetheart bowling scores at SCSU

On Valentine's Day, most couples go out to a nice restaurant or see a movie. As an alternative, the Recreation Center offers Sweetheart Bowling.
Couples are able to come and bowl for prizes, but of course you don't need a significant other to bowl with.
"It brings people together for Valentine's Day, it's not necessarily just for couples.
We have some people here just as friends," said Lindsay Bubolz, the events coordinator for the evening. "It gives students something to do on campus for Valentine's Day that's pretty cheap." It's one of the only events going on on campus for Valentine's Day. It happens every year and is fairly successful.
There were only a few couples warming up in the beginning for Sweetheart Bowling. Music was playing loudly as usual in the bowling area, while the couples and others who came just as friends signed up to start bowling.
First there was a warm-up round followed by two rounds that were scored. Scores from the second two rounds were combined in order to determine the winner.
The prizes were mainly gift certificates to restaurants such as Grizzly's and Ciatti's, but also bowling certificates for free games.
One couple that participated in the event was Beth Steinleither and Nathaniel Nordberg. The two had been going out for 15 months and had known each other since high school. They decided to go to sweetheart bowling for Valentine's Day.
"We thought it would be something different and fun to do instead of the traditional going out to eat or seeing a movie." said Steinleither as she warmed up for the game. "(Last year) We just hung around our house and had a fancy meal and rented a movie."
To celebrate Valentine's day, some sweet things that Steinleither did for Norberg was put a loveline in The University Chronicle and create a scavenger hunt one year for Norberg to find her.
Another couple at Sweetheart Bowling was Cha Vang and her boyfriend Tia Xiong. They had been going out for more than a year and met at the U of M in the Twin Cities.
For Valentine's Day, Xiong surprised Vang by making her a cake along with attending the night's event.
"It was something fun to do, it was cheap and it was on campus. We didn't have to go out, the restaurants are really busy so we decided to come here instead," Vang said.
"We just had pictures upstairs and just did 'make your own valentines' and (we) usually stay home because there isn't much around St. Cloud except for what's on campus," Vang said.
There was a decent turn out for the event and most of those who participated appeared to have a good time.
The Recreational Center is open every day of the week and besides bowling includes billiards and table tennis. The rates are low for SCSU students and is always a place to go to have some fun on campus.
Kristen Kubisiak and Chris Welle took first place in the competition and got first pick of the gift certificates. (They chose Grizzly's.)
Vang and Xiong received second place and two $10 gift certificates for dinner at Ciatti's.
