Grapplers get no love on road trip

The SCSU grapplers traveled to South Dakota this Valentine's Day weekend for two NCC battles.
There was no candy or flowers waiting for them, instead they got beat by South Dakota State and Augustana. The losses bring the Huskies record to 1-12 with just one match left before the NCC Championships (Mar. 2) and the NCAA D-II Championships (Mar. 14-15).
The Huskies best chance for a victory came Friday night in Brookings. They battled back from a big deficit and gave the No. 8 Jackrabbits a run for their money.
The first match of the night pitted Blake Christopherson (SCSU) against Jared Barnes (SDSU) at 149 pounds. Barnes won by decision giving the Jackrabbits a 3-0 lead.At 157 pounds Dan Duch (SCSU) lost a close match with Joe Kenton (SDSU), 8-6, putting the Jacks up 6-0.
In what turned out to be the upset of the weekend, No. 1 Matt Neumueller (SCSU) lost his first match since Dec. 7. Neumueller lost by fall at 7:28 in overtime to No. 4 Tyler Bryant. The match was a preview of more to come. These two top-ranked wrestlers will meet again at the NCC Championships and at the NCAA Championships. If either one wants to win a championship, they will have to go through the other one first.
The Jacks had a commanding 12-0 lead and it looked to be another blowout. But No. 8 Jon Duncombe (SCSU) had other ideas. He upset No. 5 Bryan Cowdin (SDSU) 4-2 at 174 pounds and the Huskies had their first three points.
Whatever momentum the Huskies had was erased when they had to forfeit at 184 pounds to No. 1 Tyler Jones (SDSU) because of injury. The forfeit put the Jacks on top 18-3. SDSU has four wrestlers ranked in the top five, and their depth showed against the depleted Huskies.
At 197 pounds, No. 5 Tim Boldt (SDSU) defeated Luke Pohlmeier (SCSU) 8-2, giving SDSU a 21-3 lead.
The Jackrabbits didn't have a healthy wrestler at heavyweight, giving No. 4 Dustin Darveaux (SCSU) another win this season. He increased his record to 31-2 and is on pace to be an All-American for a third straight season.
Darveaux's forfeit victory gave the Huskies six points to cut the lead to 21-9. At 125 pounds Garrett Houska (SDSU) scored a major decision victory over Stephen Clary, 13-4, clinching the match for the Jackrabbits.
The Huskies picked up victories in the final two matches from Derek Miller (133 pounds) and John Dirksen (141-pounds) as consolation, but it didn't help the outcome. The Jacks had scored a 25-15 victory over SCSU.
Saturday afternoon the Huskies hoped to rebound from their Valentine's Day hangover and gain a win over No. 15 Augustana in Sioux Falls.
The match had a similar outcome: a Husky loss and a Darveaux victory (32-2). Clary and Dirksen were pinned, Christopherson and Scott Huckle lost by major decisions and Miller and Duncombe lost by decision.
Duch, Neumueller and Pohlmeier won by decision to go along with Darveaux's major decision victory. The Vikings defeated the Huskies 26-13, ending a Valentine's Day weekend they would like to forget.
