National guard protects Duluth airbase Minnesota Army National Guard units from Duluth began a new mission Tuesday -- protecting the nearby Air National Guard Base.
About three dozen soldiers will protect the Guard's 148th Fighter Wing as part of a nationwide guard mobilization that puts 9,000 Army National Guard members at Air Force, Air Guard and Air Reserve facilities across the county.
Guard officials said that there is no connection between the deployment and several reported incidents of suspicious activity around the base. There have been media reports that the base had experienced several incidents of Middle Eastern men acting suspiciously and asking unusual questions at the Air Guard Base.
Base officials clarified Wednesday that those reports said that there had been no incident for over a year.
Stearns jail inmates to pay for beds Stearns County will charge jail inmates for double-bunks to deal with crowding problems starting sometime in the future.
County commissioners unanimously approved a $20-a-day charge for inmates and work-release prisoners during their incarceration.
They also unanimously approved a proposal to double-bunk 24 beds in the jail, as a way to minimize the number of inmates it houses in neighboring county jails, often at a $55-a-day charge.
With 30 to 40 inmates placed outside the county every day, the cost could rise to $800,000 this year.
