The Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity will be living in an igloo located on Atwood stage for 76 hours as part of its "Freeze-a-thon" to support children with cancer or other serious blood diseases.
The fundraiser will begin 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24 and run until 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27.
Money raised from the four-day event will be donated to the national Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded by famous actor, Paul Newman. The nonprofit camps provide year-round activities for campers and other seriously ill children and their siblings.
Phi Kappa Tau members plan to raise $2,000 during the event. In addition to accepting donations on campus, donation drop-ins will be located in surrounding grocery stores.
To increase awareness and inspire participation, a candlelight vigil is scheduled for 9 p.m. Monday. Jeff Mohlke, Phi Kappa Tau philanthropist chair, will kick off the event.
"This event will allow our peers to understand the needs of ill children living in communities throughout the nation," Mohlke said. "We understand the needs, so 31 of our members will 'freeze for the kids.' We are a group that wants to make a difference and work for many communities."
A variety of events will be planned throughout each day. It will range from selling snowballs for throwing at fraternity and sorority members to selling hot chocolate to stay warm.
This year the women of Delta Zeta International Sorority will be assisting and freezing with Phi Kappa Tau. Fraternity members said that if the event is successful they will make the "Freeze-a-thon" an annual event.
