Apartments near SCSU to have recycling Apartments surrounding SCSU will have to provide recycling for tenants if City Council members approve the action Monday that has let them off the hook.
A citywide recycling requirement for apartments that took effect in late 2000 left out the SCSU neighborhood because of concerns about too much recycling getting contaminated.
Since 2001, the city has sent a recycling truck to Southside and Barden parks on Wednesdays for residents to drop off recycling, but few people participate, said Steve Gaetz, director of public services.
If approved, Monday's council action would end the mobile recycling stations. Apartment landlords and property managers in the area would be required to contract with refuse haulers for recycling pickups as they do in other parts of the city, he said
Property taxes hurt education budget New property tax levies in Governor Pawlenty's school budget would not mean higher tax bills in most places, but districts might have to pay more.
Taxes would rise in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, St. Cloud and Brainerd. As part of the two-year budget plan, several aid and levy components of the state's complex school funding system would be rejiggered.
But Pawlenty hopes to shield classrooms from cuts by creating an aid category called transition revenue to replace money lost in the new calculations.
