Counseling center provides solutions for students, SCSU
Published:
Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Let's face it; there are times in our lives when we all need someone to listen -- and there are times when we all could use a little advice.
Unfortunately, dire times like those seem to occur frequently in college. Whether it's midterm stress that creeps up on a person or an ongoing issue that needs to be solved or at least expressed, everyone needs someone to whom they can turn to get outside assistance in a time of need.
However, assistance is not always possible for every person or situation. In some cases, counseling costs money that students do not have; other cases, confiding in friends or family members is not always the most pragmatic or pertinent option.
Enter the SCSU Counseling Center. Can't afford assistance? It's absolutely free. And of course, it is completely confidential and objective, so there are no biased people or viewpoints involved.
At some point, everyone needs to vent or get assistance in order to solve problems or issues. Regardless of range in personality or mood, counseling can help many people and a variety of situations.
The issue of counseling is one very pertinent right now. Between the remaining horrors revolving around the tragedies of 9/11, the Columbia tragedy and an impending war with Iraq, there are many current issues rousing emotion and conflict.
On top of that, there is the stress of being a college student. While balancing important papers, tests and midterms, most students are, at the same time, carrying various financial burdens.
There is not anything an average student can do about the impending war, being assigned midterms or certain financial troubles. However, there are some issues that counseling can handle and students have control over whether they want to choose the solution that is available.
And SCSU should be proud to even have a counseling center. Some schools don't have one. It is an imperative option that those schools should consider. A counseling center is important for a university's functioning and reputation to have healthy, happy people involved with the system.
