With all hopes of a WCHA Final Five berth gone with two losses to the University of Wisconsin over Valentine's weekend, the SCSU women's hockey team skated into this weekend's series against nonconference opponent Wayne State hoping to get their heads above water level.
Head coach Jason Lesteberg and company came out of the weekend with a split against a very similar Warrior team.
SCSU found themselves on the winning side of things Friday night besting WSU 5-1 in the opening game. After a scoreless first period in which the Huskies held a slim one shot on-goal advantage, St. Cloud would pump in four goals in just under 13 minutes in the middle frame.
Senior captain Abby Cooper started things off for SCSU as she pumped in her eighth goal of the year off a rebound at the 3:06 mark. Freshman Katie Hauge was credited with her fourth assist of the season.
SCSU's co-leading scorer Ashley Stewart put the visiting Huskies up 2-0 at the 8:16 mark with assists coming from fellow freshman Krista Simonson and sophomore Carrie Holldorf.
The Huskies weren't done yet in the period as senior Erin McNamara pumped in her sixth goal of the year to put SCSU on top 3-0. Senior Jennifer Swanson and sophomore Melanie Pudsey were credited with the assists.
Holldorf lit the lamp 2:53 later after plucking the puck from a mass of skates and firing it past WSU starting goaltender Tina Thibideau to put the game out of reach.
Anna VanderMarliere would replace Thibideau with 3:56 left in the second period and allowed a goal to Swanson with 38 seconds left in the period to put the Huskies up by five. Hauge would be credited with her second assist on the night.
The Warriors would finally get themselves on the board in the third as WSU's Jessica Haydahl cut the Husky lead to four. Emily McGrath-agg was credited with the assist.
That's all the Huskies would see of a comeback from the Warriors and SCSU picked up another win for the standings. Senior goaltender Laura Gieselman picked up the win for SCSU, stopping 19 of 20 shots.
Saturday's game would be an entirely different story, as it was one step forward, one step back for St. Cloud. The Warriors would take the second game of the series 3-0.
Wayne State's Kim Spaulding got things going midway through the first at the 10:05 mark to put the Warriors up 1-0. Kelly Meech was credited with the help on the play. That's all the offense the first period would see as the Warriors took their one-goal lead into the first intermission.
The second period wouldn't get much better for the Huskies as WSU's Rachael Benninger put her team up by two with a power play goal with less than four minutes remaining in the stanza.
The third frame would see a third Warrior goal by Naomi Kupferstein at the 7:58 mark to complete the win. Heidi Burns earned the assist on the play.
Gieselman collected the loss while stopping 19 of 23 shots. VanderMarliere would gain the shutout in stopping all 32 shots she faced. The shutout was her fourth of the season and seventh of her career.
With the split, SCSU's record goes to 10-22-0 on the season. They wrap up their season with a series at Minnesota State University, Mankato next weekend.
