Abortion bill slap in face
I am writing this letter in response to the "Real choice means information" editorial, which was concerning The Woman's Right To Know bill. The bill forces women to take a 24-hour waiting period after they have made their choice. Let me be the first to tell the people who are pro-choice and think, "this bill doesn't sound all that bad" that it truly is.

First off, it is a slap in the face to women who are considering this option. To think that a woman has not considered her options is foolhardy. Choosing this reproductive right is not something any woman takes lightly. I know women don't just decide one day, out of the blue, to have an abortion. I also know this is a choice that sticks with a person. Women don't need an extra 24 hours for anti-choice people to try and change their minds. People who introduce this are trying their best to add more hurdles for women's full reproductive options. They use clever rhetoric and phrases, like "right to know," and they think women need a cooling off period, as if a woman hasn't thought for days about her dilemma. It is just another obstacle they are placing in the way of women.

Secondly, the sad fact is that many women have to travel long distances and spend money only to have to wait another day, possibly more if the forced delay is put in front of her. Someone try and tell me that a woman spending that kind of time and money hasn't considered her options.

Finally, the legislature doesn't stick their nose into other medical matters. If a man wanted a vasectomy, he wouldn't have to wait 24 hours to "think it through."

I encourage people to contact their state legislator and he or she know that you do not support this bill and that it should not pass. We need to speak up. Too long has the pro-life minority (yes, minority) gotten their way because the majority has remained silent. If you wish to debate this with me or show support feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Have another, Palmersheim
Here's a suggestion (for Joe Palmersheim): Why don't you come up with all of your narrow-minded editorial opinions while having "a few beers" at the bar. That way, you can blame your ignorance solely on the fact that you were loaded, not just intellectually shallow.

The celebrities and others who are willing to act as human shields to stop the mass murder of innocent people are not looking for free publicity for themselves, but are looking for any publicity for the huge and ever-growing population of people around the world that feel that something needs to be done to prevent "our" president from enacting evil in the name of "our" safety and quality of life, all at the unreasonably large cost of further damaging international public perception of the values of the American people. (Which, by the way, represents a quick answer to the question: "Why do they hate us?")

And how does the willingness to sacrifice their own lives for the countless thousands of other lives make them "stupid?" In my opinion, that makes them politically aware and personally selfless, both of which are positive traits that represent moral and ethical integrity.

You say you are against the idea of a war based on oil and power plays in the Middle East, but yet you sit on your safe, cozy little pedestal and criticize those who are doing something to stop it. I think those beers clouded the fact that you're part of the problem, Joe.

You're right, I "don't see [you] standing in the way of a bomb to prove [your] point," I see you doing nothing to prevent what you know is an unjust war. To me, that apathy is as despicable as dropping bombs on innocent women and children. You're not doing it, but you're doing nothing to stop it.

So, go have another beer and sit passively by as atrocities are enacted in your name, and see where it gets you. Probably drunk, ignorant and poisoned with smallpox from the next terrorist attack caused by failed American public policy. Peace.
