Going into last weekend, SCSU track and field head coach Seth Mischke and his cast of track and field athletes were looking for a "tune-up" meet, one final event before going into the NCC Championships at South Dakota State University this weekend.
They got their tune-up at their very own SCSU Open and came out looking at the bright side of things.
"Overall, we got what we needed," Mischke said. "There weren't that many teams, and that's what we wanted, because our (athletes) performed really well."
SCSU sophomore Jodi Rosborough, a native of Bismark, N.D., provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships in the pole vault with her height of 11-1/4" and a first place finish Saturday afternoon. She joins first-year pole vaulter Adam Lee who placed third in the pole vault at NDSU on Feb. 8 with a mark of 15'5."
On the women's side of things, Mischke said they performed well, stating that a majority of the events went well for the women, as well as the men.
In the 60-meter dash, Amy Harris (Brooklyn Park) finished in second place with a time of 8.21. In the 3000 meter run, the Huskies finished in first and second place with Jen Houck (Cromwell) finishing with a time of 11:14.39 and teammate Mel Genereau (Barnum) finishing with a time of 12:33.77. One of the biggest stand outs on the day was senior Amy Dombrovski. The sprinter finished in second place in the 400- meter dash with a time of 59.78. Mischke said the significance of that time was a step in the right direction.
"It's the first time she's broken 60 seconds in a long time," Mischke said.
"We were really happy about that."
Dombrovski also finished in second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.32. Freshman Molly Hansen (Eagan) finished sixth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:18.33 and teammate Nicole Dolence (Moorhead) finished four places behind in 10th place with a time of 3:27.45.
In the high jump, senior Stacy Baumbach finished in first place with a height of five feet, four and one-half inches. Teammate Melissa Bachman (Paynesville) rounded out all SCSU women's scoring finishing third in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet and one-half inches.
Mishke was also happy with Baumbach's performance on the day.
"She's doing better, it's just a matter of time before she breaks out," he said.
On the men's side, things also went well. Senior Shane Hoag finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.12. Teammate Ryan Koch (Madison, WI) finished in seventh place clocking in with a 7.23.
In the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Jared Lazer (Sauk Rapids) finished in second place with a time of 8.64. Koch finished in third with a time of 8.68 seconds. Jason Koch finished two places behind with a time of 8.80 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, Jonny Olson (Richfield) finished in first place with a time of 49.89. Teammate Josh Bitz (Grey Eagle) finished closely behind in third place with a time of 50.55. Lance Johnson (Rocori) turned in a fourth place tally with a time of 50.77 seconds.
SCSU took away a first place finish in the 600-meter dash when junior Justin Antus finished with a time of 1:23.46. In the 1000-meter run, Keith Stenzel finished in sixth with a time of 2:47.71.
The Huskies had five members of their team finish in the top five in the 200-meter dash. Olson finished first (22.90), Bitz in second (22.95), Johnson in third (23.10), freshman Steve Bader in fourth with a time of 23.20 and Hoag in fifth (23.23). Antus would finish 10th with a time of 23.90
"I think Jonny Olson and some of our other runners are just looking to break out," Mischke said. "I think they're almost at that point."
In the 5000-meter run, Travis Hoover finished in third place with 16:14.81. In the field events, Lee pole vaulted his way to a mark of 14 feet, 11 and three-fourths inches and a first place finish. Teammate Mike Aulwes (Brooklyn Center) finished in second with a mark of 14 feet.
In the shot put, Jason Koch finished in seventh place with a heave of 45 feet, three and three-fourths inches. Brother Ryan finished in ninth with a tally of 43 feet, one-half inches.
In the long jump, Jacob Marcotte turned in a third place finish with a mark of 20 feet, 11 and one-fourth inches.
Looking ahead to this weekend, Mischke is excited for his team's chances at the NCC Championships held at SDSU. Mischke stated that it was a high quality event and there is always something going on.
"It's always an exciting meet, we face some top quality opponents," he said. "We hope to mix it up with them, score some points and do the best we can."
