| Wednesday, Student Employment Services held its 14th annual Summer Job Fair in the Atwood Memorial Center Ballroom.
Student Employment Services serves as a liaison between employers and students at SCSU. Their main goal is to assist students in finding jobs that will accommodate their life as a full time student.
Every year they host two job fairs; the part time job fair is held during kick-off week in the beginning of fall semester and the Summer Job Fair is held during spring semester.
This year's Summer Job Fair offered quite an expanse of employment opportunities that ranged from working as a telemarketer for Meyer Associates, Inc., a camp counselor for Covenant Pines Bible Camp or a sales person for a from a line of jewelry and cosmetics by Avon.
The companies at the fair also came from a wide variety of locations to provide employment to students who live outside the St. Cloud area such as Edina, Bloomington, McGregor and Chisholm.
The Ballroom was packed with students, booths and employers while managers made themselves readily available to answer any questions and encourage students to become applicants.
Canterbury Parks' HR Coordinator Matthew Messerschmidt was present to provide people with the job opportunities Canterbury Park has to offer.
This was Canterbury's third year at the job fair and was the tenth job fair they had attended since February. Messerschmidt frequently finds success going to college campuses because they offer a good cross section of people that they are looking for.
"The kids that we do talk to, generally, we hire," Messerschmidt said.
Because Canterbury has over 1000 employees, of which only about 350 are full time, there are many part time positions that need to be filled.
One of the main positions that Canterbury fills when presenting their company at summer job fairs is mutual teller. They work during Canterbury's busiest time, the live racing season, which runs from May to September.
"The majority of college kids work as mutual tellers, the people that take the bets on the horse racing," Messerschmidt said. "It's one of our better paying jobs, $9.50 an hour plus tips. It's like being a teller at a bank except a lot more intense. You're going through a lot more people and it's faster, but you're not having to do all of the paperwork; it's just cash for tickets."
Besides mutual tellers, Canterbury has many entry-level positions such as ushering, working with hospitality or the information center. When employees become more advanced and better at their money handling skills, they can begin working at the card tables or as bartenders.
Mike Luethmers, a sophomore Aviation major, spoke to Messerschmidt and showed interest in Canterbury Park, along with several other jobs.
"I'm searching for a possible job this summer, and it's been very beneficial to me; they have a vast array of job opportunities," Luethmers said. "I'm interested in a lot of the outdoor jobs they're offering. SCSU has definitely done a good job with the fair."
Besides offering employment in the community, the job fair offered jobs right here on the SCSU campus for students who live in the area or are remaining on campus this summer.
The SCSU Admissions Office is hiring for customer service representatives, tour guides and a telecommunications team.
Career Services, which helps assist students in developing competitive skills, job search strategies and self-marketing, is hiring as well.
Despite the large turnout of students at the job fair, those who were not able to attend but still wish to get information on summer jobs can contact Student Employment Services.
Their Web site is www.scsustudentjobs.com, and their phone number is (320)-255-3756. Students are also encouraged to get their desired information and apply as quickly as possible considering companies begin hiring for summer employment as soon as April.
