Mother fakes child's cancer for money A mother pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday to theft and child endangerment charges alleging she faked her 7-year-old daughter's leukemia to obtain donations.
The girl's father and grandmother also pleaded not guilty to theft and other charges alleging the family obtained or tried to obtain $31,000 in donations.
Judge Roger Wilson ordered Teresa Milbrandt to undergo psychological evaluation. She declined to comment.
Police said Teresa Milbrandt shaved her daughter's hair and gave her sleeping pills to make it appear she was receiving chemotherapy, made her wear a protective mask and put her in counseling to prepare for death. Police learned in December the girl did not have cancer.
Whale trapped in fishing gear seen alive An endangered North Atlantic right whale spotted last summer entangled in fishing gear was seen again, still snarled in fishing line, off Cape Cod, Mass. this week.
A team from the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown spotted the female whale Monday en route to monitor another group of whales, but was unable to free her. The whale was named Piper and is believed to be about 10-years-old.
In 1991, the group made a failed summer-long effort to rescue a right whale tangled in rope at a cost more than $250,000. The whale died.
Researchers attempting to monitor Piper tried to attach a telemetry buoy to the whale to help track her location, but they were unable to do so. Efforts to rescue Piper will continue.
