The SCSU softball team continued their winning ways last weekend.
In four days, the Huskies accumulated a record of 6-1 as they dominated teams at the Missouri Western Invite and split a doubleheader with Southwest State in Marshall Tuesday.
The No. 21 Huskies played a slate of three games Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo. One of the closest games of the day was the first game as the Huskies edged out Northwest Missouri by a final score of 2-1.
Northwest got on the board first as they brought a runner home in the first inning, but the Huskies came back and scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win.
Junior pitcher Nicole Webb was credited with the win. Fellow junior first baseman Brooke Gentzler nailed a solo homer, which ended up being the deciding run in the game.
The second game was also close, but the Huskies showed some more signs of offense as they defeated Truman State 5-4. SCSU scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning to stave off a late three-run rally from Truman.
Central Missouri State was no contest for the St. Cloud fastpitchers in the last game Saturday as they romped Central Mizzou, 10-0. Senior pitcher Megan Grimes received the win and the shutout, improving her season record to 7-2.
Day two at the Missouri Western Invite was more of the same tough Husky defense and big offense. SCSU put up seven runs to Wayne State's two Sunday and accumulated their sixth straight victory behind the big bats of Gentzler and senior catcher Abby Bourman. Both had home runs in the game.
The final game in the Missouri roadtrip had SCSU playing the host team, Missouri Western, for the third time in three days. The previous Thursday the Huskies played a double header and beat them both times, 1-0 and 14-4.
In the third game, SCSU was going for the sweep and got it. Winning pitcher Megan Grimes and the Huskies only allowed one MWU run, winning 3-1.
SCSU went 7-0 during the trip and improved their overall record to 16-6. Head coach Paula U'Ren was pleased with her team's effort.
"We came off a long bus trip and played tough teams," U'Ren said. "We played Missouri Western three times and it is always tough to beat a team three times."
After Missouri, the next stop was Marshall for an inter-state battle with Southwest State University Tuesday.
The first game looked like a bad Minnesota hailstorm with balls flying through the air almost every inning. Sophomore outfielder Cally Stewart and junior shortstop Angie Berg were the players responsible for much of the clutter in the air.
Both players had two home runs on the evening and Berg finished with four hits to lead the Huskies. Webb received the win as SCSU handily beat Southwest in six innings, 11-0.
"We came out and pounded them in the first game," Gentzler said of her team's impressive performance.
The second game didn't pan out as well as SCSU would have hoped, but they kept it close losing to SWSU, 4-3. The Mustangs scored all of their runs in the first innings, but SCSU still came up short.
"We just gave up too many runs in the first inning and put ourselves behind the eight ball to start the game," U'Ren said. "We had our opportunities, but Southwest held us for the rest of the game."
"It didn't turn out the way we wanted, but we'll learn from it and move on," Gentzler said of the tough loss.
St. Cloud's record now stands at an impressive 17-7 and they'll begin to gear up for their next road trip, which is also to Missouri, for the Northwest Missouri Invite in Maryville. Games were held Saturday and Sunday. No information was available on SCSU's games when this edition went to press.
