Joe Durham hits home one of his two RBIs in the first of two games against Winona State Tuesday. SCSU lost the first game 8-3.
Although the weather outside isn't very encouraging, the SCSU baseball team has started to heat up lately.
The Huskies split a doubleheader with Winona State on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Putz Field and brought their record to 6-12 after dropping the first seven games of the season in Texas last month.
The Huskies fell behind early in the first game when left fielder Ben Vasquez scorched a one-out double to the center field wall. Jeff Dobbertin popped out to Matt Hoelscher at second base for the second out. That brought up the clean-up hitter and first baseman Kyle Butt. Butt unloaded on a 1-0 pitch, sending it screaming over the wall in right. Butt's homer gave the Warriors the 2-0 lead.
The Huskies countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first with a good old-fashioned manufactured run. SCSU right fielder Ryan Kapsner led off the inning with a seven-pitch walk. Kapsner then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch thrown by Warriors' pitcher Ryan Seamons.
Zach Bertischi struck out looking for the first out and then Joe Durham got Kapsner home with a fielder's choice to second base. That got the Huskies to within one at 2-1.
WSU went down one-two-three in the top of the second and the Huskies tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
D.H. Nate Swan led off with a double that left his bat like a rocket and ended up hitting the wall. Swan moved to third on David Dahl's fielder's choice to second and then Swan scored on Jake Asher's RBI single to left. That tied the game at 2-2.
Things stayed that way until the top of the fifth when the Warriors exploded for six runs that all but sealed the door on game one.
The Warriors pounded out six hits in the inning. Vasquez scored two on his single, Luke Short brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, Erik Steigerwald connected on a RBI double and Nolan Gilbertson knocked home two with a single. Seamons (2-1) got the win for the Warriors and Mike Hoelscher (1-2) took the loss for SCSU in the 8-3 defeat.
In the nightcap, the Huskies put the first game behind them and came away with a 6-4 victory over the Warriors.
Pitcher Andrew Garry (1-2) picked up his first win of the season as the Huskies scored six runs on six hits. The Warriors also contributed to the Husky win by committing four errors in the ball game.
The Huskies came out of the gates firing as they scored the first three runs of the game in the second inning. Shortstop Brock Mutcheson doubled home a run. Kevin MacDonald, who replaced Mike Hoelscher in the first game at second base, also knocked home a run on a double.
The Warriors got as close as 3-2, but the Huskies added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs on one hit. Matthew Bowe (2-1) took the loss for Winona, whose record fell to 10-10.
The Huskies continue NCC play this coming weekend with a two-game series on the road against the University of Northern Colorado.
