Late fines on materials returned to the Circulation Desk will be removed during National Library Week. Overdues Amnesty @ Your Library is available from April 6-11.
This week marks a very important week for all patrons who have outstanding library fines with the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center.
This chance opportunity marks National Library Week at SCSU this means that those who have an overdue fine for any material checked out before April 6 may return it to the library and be shown amnesty. All materials that have outstanding fines, that are returned between April 6-12 will have their fines removed.
"I do think it's a great time to turn things in," said Melinda Dermody, coordinator of access services for the Miller Center.
"I do think students will take advantage of this opportunity."
Alex Jankila, who works at the Circulation desk said that the binder of names with outstanding materials filled 166 pages, with each page holding 5-12 names of people with fines.
"That's a lot of people," Jankila said.
So how do you know if you qualify?
"It works that by any materials that were checked out before April 6th is eligible," Jankila said. "Any later materials they have they can bring in and everything should be just fine."
Any material, even laptops and videos qualify. The key to qualification is that materials have to have been checked out before April 6, have outstanding fines and be brought in by April 12. Fines can range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars.
"It ranges from late fines to very late fines," Dermody said. "It will be nice (for students) to have those fines removed for them and good for us to get our items back."
National Library Week marks the third year that the Campaign for America's Libraries has promoted amnesty for patrons. The Campaign for America's Libraries is a public education campaign that is sponsored by the American Library Association and other libraries from across the country. Total, more than 10,000 libraries in every state participate.
Students, faculty and persons from the community are encouraged to return any items that have some type of fine this week. However, if the material is checked out during the week and collects a fine and is returned after April 12, you will not be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Students who have fines are prevented from registering or graduating until the fines have been removed one way or another.
