SCSUs Abby Bourman tosses the ball back to pitcher Nicole Webb after a bunt base hit during Tuesdays doubleheader in which the Huskies took both games.
The St. Cloud State Huskies home opener Tuesday was a game of strong bats and good defense.
The victims of SCSU's skills was the Minnesota State University- Moorhead Dragons. The Huskies put up two impressive performances in the doubleheader, beating the Dragons by the eight-run mercy rule in the first game 12-2, and taking the fire out of the Dragons offense in the second game 5-0.
Two Husky sluggers tied school home run records in the first game. Senior catcher Abby Bourman and junior first baseman Brooke Gentzler both had dingers in the first game for their 21st homers in both players' career. Jody Breuske holds the current record of 21 career home runs during the 1995-98 seasons.
Bourman's homer was a two-run second-inning jack on a sun-drenched Tuesday at Selke Field. Gentzler's record-tying tater was a little more impressive as it sealed the deal for the Husky victory.
The score was 9-2 when Gentzler came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth with two girls on base. To achieve the eight-run mercy rule, a team must be up by eight at the end of five. The first pitch from Dragon pitcher Shee Nelson was pure meat as Gentzler hit a three-run homer. The dinger gave the Huskies a 12-2 victory.
"It was kind of a weird one," Gentzler said. "It was real high and I didn't think it was going to go out, but it was nice because that put an end to the game. And we didn't have to go seven innings."
The second game was more of a battle as SCSU went seven innings with Moorhead. Head coach Paula U'Ren said that getting used to the pitching played a factor in the difference between the first and second games.
"It takes a little bit of patience sometimes because they change speeds," U'Ren said. "We just stuck with it and the second or third time around we started hitting the ball hard."
Junior pitcher Nicole Webb did some good pitching of her own in the second game with four strikeouts in the shutout. The big bats for the Huskies came out in the final two innings when they scored all of their runs.
Senior Amy Anderson was perfect at the plate going three-for-three, Bourman went two-for-four with an RBI and Gentzler and junior shortstop Angie Berg both went one-for-two.
Those stats proved that St. Cloud has one of the more potent offenses around, which U'Ren agrees with.
"Our offense is just outstanding at times," she said. "They didn't have a lot of strikes to hit, but when they did, they hit it hard."
Overall, the Huskies were happy to finally play at home. Most importantly, it began the second part of their season with a sweep and some great offense.
"This is a good start," Gentzler said. "We kind of broke up the season into three parts. Our preseason is done and this is a good start to the middle part of our season."
"It's so nice to come back to Selke and have a chance to be at home and play in front of our fans," U'Ren said.
The Huskies couldn't bask in the April Selke sun, or their victories for too long. Wednesday marked the start of SCSU's NCC season with a doubleheader against Minnesota State University, Mankato at Mankato.
The results of those games were not available at the time this edition went to press.
