Gopher hockey win prompts riots The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities' Gopher men's hockey team made history Saturday night by becoming the first team in 31 years to win back-to-back NCAA titles. They beat New Hampshire 5-1 to win hockey's Frozen Four title, and are the first team to repeat as national champs since Boston University in 1971-72.
Celebrations following the Gophers' victory quickly escalated out of control at the University of Minnesota. Soon after the game -- played in New York - riots broke out in the university's Dinkytown neighborhood. Police wearing riot gear used tear gas several times in an attempt to disperse the students, but were frustrated as the crowds reformed in other areas.
There are no reports of injuries, but there were dozens of acts of vandalism. Several vehicles, including one KARE-TV vehicle, were lit on fire.
Suspects sought in violent robbery Police in northern Minnesota are looking for two men who they say held a quadriplegic and his roommate hostage for more than two hours while robbing their home.
Police say the suspects broke into John Matteen's home early Thursday morning, bound Matteen and his roommate with duct tape and beat them. Matteen says every time he tired to get a look at the suspects they hit him on the head with a wrench.
Matteen says he and the police believe the suspects could be from outside the Cloquet area, perhaps Duluth or the Twin Cities.
