Survey: Minnesota children doing better
The annual Kids Count report by the Children's Defense Fund shows that Minnesota children are doing better overall than a decade ago. The number of Minnesota teens giving birth has gone down and fewer youth are being arrested for serious crimes.

But the director of the Kids Count report warns that cuts to day care, after school and other programs under Governor Pawlenty's proposed budget could hurt children and their families.

Diane Benjamin directs the annual report of 11 health, economic and education statistics that address the well-being of Minnesota's children. She called it an important time to look at how Minnesota kids are doing.

The Pawlenty administration said its budget proposal would largely spare basic classroom funding and programs that directly serve children - cuts are aimed at adults without children.

Senators to hold hearing on junk e-mail
Minnesota's two senators held a panel discussion on junk e-mail. Consumers and business people complain that the messages waste their time and ties up computer resources.

E-mail advertisement messages often try to lure readers into investments in miracle medical products, get-rich-quick schemes and pornography. Filtering software can help reduce the amount of junk e-mail received, but some always seems to get through.
