Music fest to impress

Spring weather has finally arrived and the semester is coming to an end. Many may find this call for celebration.

UPB presents its 18th annual Mississippi Music Fest Sunday at Riverside Park.

This event will continue its tradition with a variety of bands, children's area, climbing wall, big chair photos, arts and crafts and food. The only difference will be a new logo.

This year's bands have a diverse range; opening with Battle of the Unsigned Bands winner McKinley Place at 11 a.m., Darrin Rosha & Germantown, a country band will follow at 12:15 p.m., Jude Kastle, an acoustic soloist takes the stage at 1:45. Next will be Keith Secola, an alternative Native American music ("Alter-Native") at 3:30. Leading up to the headliner, Kory and the Fireflies play at 5:00 p.m. and Minnesota native Soul Asylum will conclude the evening at 6:15.

"In recent years, we just got the national headliners. Last year we had Better than Ezra," said Jesse Birnstihl, Mississippi Music Fest coordinator, "My favorite was probably two years ago when we had Blessed Union of Souls."

Besides touring nationwide over their 10 album career, Soul Asylum has performed in Central Minnesota at Pine Stock, an annual outdoor fest produced by College of St. Benedict, as well as The Red Carpet.

Kory and the Fireflies have become fairly popular nationally with about 50 stations playing their hit single, "Everyone." They were also named a Budweiser true music band and have performed with over 40 national acts, including Soul Asylum.

"We did a big outdoor fest - Bash in the Grass; I've always been a fan of theirs," Kory Van Sickle said.

This summer they will appearing at the Red Carpet June 5th.

Jude Kastle performed previously at SCSU Live at Lunch, November 16th of this year.

"She had a huge audience at that Live at Lunch series," said Ryan Meints, concert coordinator and the Mississippi Music Fest committee member.

Keith Secola has performed at such prominent venues as the 1996 Olympic Games, Sundance Film Festival, Berlin Music Festival and SXSW (South by Southwest).

"This is a huge event that ties together St. Cloud state University and the St. Cloud community," Meints said.

Shuttle Service will be available from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., servicing: Atwood, K-Lot and Riverside Park. Rainsite: Halenbeck Fieldhouse.
