The Husky baseball team ended a 10-game losing streak Monday afternoon at Dick Putz field as they won the first two games of a doubleheader against the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
In the first game, junior Joe Durham hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Mavericks. In the second game of the doubleheader, UNO showed that they meant business with a 7-0 shutout over the Huskies.
In the first game, besides the game-winning hit, Durham also knocked in the first run of the game when he laced a double into the gap that scored catcher Travis Thompson.
The Mavs fought back and tied the game at one in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jim Sledge. The Mavericks looked to put the game away in the top of the seventh when they scored two more runs on sacrifice flies and grabbed a 3-1 lead.
The Huskies had one more chance to end the losing streak in the bottom of the seventh. Jake Asher and Zach Bertschi led off with singles. Then, junior Dustin Fenwick singled in Asher, Durham hit a double that scored Bertschi and Fenwick and the Huskies won in dramatic fashion.
Durham finished the game two-for-four with three RBI. Chase Nelson picked up his first victory of the year in relief, but the Huskies stayed in the game with brilliant pitching from starter Nick Miller. Miller pitched five-and-a-third, giving up just three hits and one run.
UNO stormed back in the second game via the long ball. Maverick right fielder Justin Cook hit a three-run blast in the top of the fifth as the Mavs scored four runs on five hits to take the 4-0 lead. They would add three more and go on for the 7-0 victory.
The Huskies committed two errors and only managed four hits against the Mavericks. Mike Hoelscher (1-5) took the loss for the Huskies, whose record fell to 7-23 and 2-10 in the NCC.
Tuesday afternoon, the Huskies and Mavericks concluded their four-game series with another split. Once again, SCSU won the first game and were shutout by Omaha in the second game.
The first game started the same as Monday's. Thompson scored on a Durham RBI double and the Huskies took the early 1-0 lead. The Huskies finally used the long ball to their advantage in the second when designated hitter Kevin Macdonald knocked a solo homer over the advertisement billboards in left. SCSU added to their lead in the fourth by scoring two more runs to go up 4-0.
However, the Mavericks would answer in the top of the fifth by scoring four runs on five hits, two of those runs on a homerun by Patrick Johnson to tie the game at four.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies put up the go-ahead run when third baseman Nate Swan singled in Thompson for the 5-4 lead.
UNO threatened in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases, but were unable to get the tying run home as the Huskies won 5-4. Fenwick (1-0) got the win for the St. Cloud in relief.
Once again the Huskies had a letdown in game two. Spencer Doyle singled in two runs for the Mavs as they put up six runs in the fourth inning.
Blayne Penney (0-4) gave up seven hits and took the loss for the Huskies.
