Ulferts lands three recruits in signing binge
Women's basketball team picks up three top recruits for next season

SCSU women's basketball coach Lori Ulferts hoped to sign a player this spring who would help the Huskies improve in the post next season.
Instead, she signed three.
Erika Quigley, Krista Kettner and Sarah Cotner are all 6-foot-2 and hope to give the Huskies a force inside, something they lacked in the 2002-03 season when they finished 3-13 in the NCC and 8-19 overall.
"We needed a post and now we have three," Ulferts said. "We were lacking in that area."
Quigley attended Duluth East High School and averaged 18.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 55.7 percent from the field and 72.3 percent from the free throw line. She was also named to the Class 3A All-State team and was a four-year varsity volleyball player at Duluth East.
"I expect good things to happen for her fast," Ulferts said. "She's got a lot of potential. She can run the court very well and can do a lot of things around the basket."
Kettner comes from Iowa Lakes Community College where she played in 31 games last season and averaged 11.9 points and seven rebounds per game. She also shot 54.9 percent from the field and earned second team All-Region honors as a sophomore. Kettner attended Nicollet High School where she holds the school record for rebounding and field goal percentage.
"She's an aggressive, physical player who can play with her back to the basket or facing the basket," Ulferts said. "She really gives us some instant aggressiveness and she has some experience which will help."
Cotner comes from Stillwater Area High School where she led her team in scoring (9.5) and rebounding (6) in her senior season. She was named team MVP in 2003 and was selected to the Suburban East All-Conference squad. Cottner was injured her junior year, making her senior campaign even more impressive.
"She can both play the post and defend the post," Ulferts said. "She comes from a strong basketball area. Stillwater is strong and has a good history in basketball."
Another area the Huskies struggled in last season was three-point shooting. SCSU shot only 28.4 percent from beyond the arc last season and averaged only 4.2 treys per game. Opponents shot 38 percent and made 8.1 three-pointers a game.
Ulferts hopes Laura Legge, a 5-foot-10 guard from Aberdeen Central High School in South Dakota, will help SCSU improve in this area.
"She (Legge) was one of the top players in South Dakota," Ulferts said. "Academically she is very bright - you name it and she was in it. Plus, she can shoot the three-pointer from anywhere."
Legge was a four-year varsity starter, a five-year letterwinner and a two-year captain in basketball. Her team finished second in the 2003 state tournament where she received the 2003 "Spirit of Su" award, which is annually given to the tournament's outstanding player. Legge averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists-per game.
Ulferts knows that these four players will have a role to play on next season's team. Exactly who will be playing right away and who will be given more time to progress is still uncertain.
"You'd think the transfers would get more playing time, but you can't forget about the freshman," Ulferts said. "It's really too early to tell. It's best just to wait and see."
