Smallpox vaccine for monkeypox disease
Published:
Thursday, June 12, 2003
While the federal investigation of monkeypox has expanded to eight more states, making the total 15, the Center for Disease Control is recommending the smallpox vaccine for anyone who has been exposed to the virus. The vaccine can prevent the disease up to two weeks after having close contact with an infected person or animal.
Monkeypox is a mild relative of smallpox, which produces pus-filled blisters, fever, rash, chills and aches. This is the first outbreak of monkeypox in the Western Hemisphere. As of Wednesday, health officials confirmed a total of nine human cases of the disease- four in Wisconsin, four in Indiana and one in Illinois. No one has died of the disease.
