Violence in Middle East continues
Published:
Thursday, June 12, 2003
The latest helicopter attack on Palestine hit a neighborhood east of Gaza City. Three people were killed, two of which were identified as members of the militant wing of Hamas. The U.S. State Department has labeled Hamas, a Palestinian fundamentalist group, as a terrorist organization. Earlier Wednesday, three of the seven people killed in another helicopter attack were also Hamas militants.
The attacks came shortly after a suicide bomb detonated on a bus in Jerusalem. 16 people were killed as 70 others, including children, were wounded.
The violence between Israelis and Palestinians threatens to stall the U.S.-backed road map to peace that both parties agreed to last week.
"It is clear," President Bush said, "There are people in the Middle East who hate peace."
