Summer brings new look, changes to Chronicle
Published:
Thursday, June 12, 2003
Welcome, readers, to the first summer session at SCSU. While we hate to be cliche and bring up the weather, this is probably one of the nicest times of year to be on campus - instead of bare trees and cold snow drifts, visitors to SCSU see a campus set against lush greenness.
Incidentally, this is also a great time to be at University Chronicle. Over the past few months, the University Chronicle staff has brainstormed ideas and thought about ways that we might improve SCSU's campus newspaper.
A lot of us are new this year, compared to last year's veteran staff, but we're excited to be here and learn, and are happy to bring stories of news, people and happenings around campus to our community and hope to continue to improve the Minnesota Newspaper Association recognized quality of our newspaper.
Frequent readers of University Chronicle may notice that our front page has a new look. We've tried to clean it up, simplify things a bit and make it easier to read. There are other small, subtle changes to our layout and news content underway, though some of them will not be evident until the fall. We hope the Chronicle's facelift is a welcome improvement to our readers.
We would like to acknowledge and thank Sheila Bussinger, a copy editor at the St. Cloud Times, SCSU alumnus and former University Chronicle staff member, for her hard work in helping us with our improvements to the Chronicle's look.
We would also like to introduce the work of editorial artist Thien Tran. Thien is a recent arrival to SCSU who enjoys drawing. We are pleased to be able to offer you an original cartoon from a local, SCSU student and look forward to running more of her work in the future.
Some readers may be wondering where the Sports, Diversions and Opinions sections of University Chronicle went. The University Chronicle's summer staff is significantly less than during the normal academic year. Consequently, we produce a smaller paper over the summer, which comes out Thursdays during the first and second summer sessions. While the Chronicle has "just a 'news' section" during the summer, we are still committed to diversifying our content to include a mix of news, sports, arts and recreation articles that we hope are considered both informative and entertaining. Sports, Diversions and the Opinions sections will return in the fall.
Because we do have such a limited staff, we ask that the SCSU community be patient with our reduced office hours. There are few people here on weekdays during the summer and even less on weekends. The best time to find the office open is Wednesdays, anytime after noon. We will frequently check our fax and phone messages, those numbers can be found on page 2 of every issue.
We thank the SCSU community for its continued readership and feedback and we look forward to serving you in the coming year.
