Wayne Wells will serve as the interim dean for the College of Business during the 2003-04 academic year. Wells has taught accounting at SCSU since he came here in 1983 and has been recognized with several research awards. Ali Malekzadeh, the current College of Business dean, is leaving SCSU to pursue opportunities at Xavier University in Ohio.
The G.R. Herberger College of Business and the College of Science and Engineering will go under leadership of new deans beginning July 1.
Wayne Wells and David DeGroote will be filling interim dean positions for the 2003-2004 academic school year in the College of Business and the College of Science and Engineering, respectively.
These interim deans will oversee operations in their respective colleges until permanent deans are located for the 2004-2005 school year.
The current dean for the College of Business, Ali Malekzadeh, is leaving to pursue other opportunities at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Wells, the newly appointed interim dean for the College of Business is not new to the position. He served as the associate dean of the College of Business from 1990 to 1998, and was also interim associate dean for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years. He will fill the position easily after working closely with Malekzadeh.
"We are delighted that Dr. Wells has again stepped forward to take this leadership role," SCSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Micheal Spitzer said.
Wells will be in charge of overseeing various areas of the College of Business including the MBA program, the Small Business Development Center, the Harold Anderson Entrepreneurial Center and the Small Business Institute.
He is expected to be successful and helpful to the college of business.
"His leadership experience and his strong relationships in the business community will be real assets as we work together to provide a quality education for our business students," Spitzer said.
Wells had taught accounting since he joined the university in 1983 and has been awarded several research awards; he was also named one of the initial Herberger Distinguished Professors.
DeGroote has been appointed to the position of the dean of the College of Science and Engineering. He has chaired the department of Biological Sciences since 1996 and has a Ph.D in botany from the University of Iowa. As interim dean, DeGroote will be responsible for colleges, 12 departments and 17 pre-professional programs. He spent three years in the Peace Corps in Micronesia and was one of the principle writers of the college of Science and Engineering five-year strategic plan. He also serves on advisory committees for St. Cloud Technical College and Anoka Community College.
"Dr. DeGroote has been an exemplary leader and enthusiastic participant in strategic planning for the department," Spitzer said. "He has always shown a strong commitment to the college, as well as to the outside community."
These candidates were interviewed by a committee which was selected by the faculty association, the committee then gave their recommendations to Michael Spitzer who made the final decision.
"We look for (candidates with) some administrative experience who we trust can serve as a leader," Spitzer said.
The two interim deans will serve for the full academic year, during which candidates will be sought after and selected for the permanent position. According to Spitzer, some structure changes may occur before permanent deans are chosen.
