FDA forces labeling of trans fat
Published:
Thursday, July 10, 2003
The Food and Drug Administration decided yesterday that they will now force food processors to include the amount of artery-clogging trans fatty acids on the nutrition label.
Manufacturers have until Jan. 1, 2006 to include the information on their nutrition labels, where it will appear directly below the saturated fat content.
The F.D.A. estimates that the change in regulations will save between $900 million and $1.8 billion a year in medical costs. Saturated fat is naturally contained in many foods while trans fat is added.
Fast food and restaurants are not included in this ruling, but may be considered in the future.
