Vatican asserts same-sex marriage stance
Published:
Thursday, July 31, 2003
Pope John Paul II has been speaking out against the legalization of same-sex marriages for months but feels the Vatican must go a step further. As acceptance for legal same-sex unions grows stronger throughout the world, the Vatican plans to release a document entitled "Considerations Regarding Proposals to Give Legal Recognition to Unions Between Homosexual Persons."
The document gives details to politicians and other lay people on how to deal with the issue in public forums and legislatures, emphasizing people to oppose the rights given to heterosexual couples.
Despite the church's efforts and teachings, same-sex marriages have become legalized in more countries over the last two years, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Ontario and British Columbia's recent court rulings have also legalized homosexual marriages.
