Soccer team splits in trip to Michigan

The SCSU soccer team split this weekend's road trip to Michigan with a 2-1 win over Northern Michigan University and a 2-0 loss to Saginaw Valley State University.
The Huskies got a huge contribution from freshman Anne Litecky who single-handedly carried the scoring load Saturday against Northern Michigan with the first two goals of her collegiate career. The Duluth East native struck first at 30:47 assisted by junior Abbey Fredrickson. Litecky, who set a school record in scoring at Duluth East High School with 75 goals, struck nearly 10 minutes later, which proved to be the game winner.
Husky head coach Stephanie McGuinness was high on Litecky at the beginning of the season, and her prediction of the freshman's scoring contributions finally became reality four games into the season.
"(McGuinness) said that she had a feeling I'd score soon and I thought the same thing," Litecky said. "I was really working hard to break that pressure of scoring my first goal. That was the performance I needed to push me. Now I feel like I know what I'm doing."
Northern Michigan finally broke the shutout at 88:43 with a goal by Carolyn Kunas.
NMU outshot the Huskies 18-7, but the Huskies were able to capitalize on their opportunities.
"We may have been outshot but our forwards did a great job of finishing," said SCSU goalie Stephanie Brendel. "We hope Anne (Litecke) can continue to do that. All of our forwards are very good. We have a lot of different combinations of forwards that will give other teams problems. It could be Trista (Cooke), Heidi (Westrum) or (Jenny) Gill that could also have big nights for us. They're starting to click well now."
Brendel was solid in the net with three saves while holding the NMU offense to only one goal.
"It was definitely a game that I needed to have, because I've been in a big slump lately," Brendel said. "It helps to see that my team was excited, and I got a lot of help from my defense. The defense and midfielders were communicating very well."
The Huskies ran into some weather issues in Sunday's matchup with Saginaw Valley State University. They played their first game of the season in the rain, and things got slippery and ugly in their 2-0 loss.
Perhaps the worst part of the loss was the injury to captain Melissa Regnier. The junior midfielder taken to the local emergency room after she hurt her foot while taking a nasty fall. The medical status of her foot will likely be cleared up next week.
Junior Christine Luther scored first on an assist from defender Jennifer Prior at the 10:00 mark, as the result of a mishandled ball by Brendel.
"It slipped right through my hands," Brendel said. "It was a save that I would usually have made but the ball was so slippery. I went down while trying to regain myself and (Luther) came from the backside and at that point there was nothing I could do but cringe."
SVSU scored again as a result of another sloppy play at 70:30. A loose ball again slipped around near the moist goal crease and ended up deflecting off of defender Dana Parus, who was apparently pushed during the play.
This time the Husky offense couldn't capitalize while being outshot again. This time they were outshot 15-7.
The loss moved SCSU's record to 2-3-1 and SVS's record was lifted to 3-2-1.
Even though the Huskies moved themselves back into a losing record, they decided to look at the positives.
"We didn't look at (Sunday's) game as a huge loss," Brendel said. "The ball was so hard to control today and there was nothing we could do. Any other day I think we would've beat them without a question."
The Huskies will have their first home game of the season on Wednesday against Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. Because of the construction of Halenbeck Field, SCSU will be playing at Whitney Park all season.
