Volleyball splits in South Dakota
Published:
Monday, October 6, 2003
The SCSU women's volleyball team went on the road this weekend for two matches in South Dakota. Following Friday night's loss to Augustana in three games, the Huskies rebounded Saturday, upending the University of South Dakota in five very close games.
Despite falling Friday night to Augustana in three games, the Huskies stayed close the whole match, losing the three games by an average of 4.5 points.
Augustana is ranked 14th in the N.C.C., and ups their record to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the division.
The Husky offense faltered in their usually consistent point production, with no Husky registering double digit kills. However, across the court the Augies were led by Jackie Hingst's 15 kills, while Teresa Resch had 12 and Sara Larson had 10. Captain Kari Turkowski registered 36 set assists in the losing effort, while Augustana's Angie Hummel tallied 49.
Saturday's match against South Dakota State University went the maximum five games, with SCSU finally coming away with a 30-28, 33-35, 30-28, 29-31 and 18-16 win. Looking to avenge their loss to Augustana the previous day, the Huskies came out shooting with all six starters registering double-digit kill totals. Juniors Lindsay Ashburn and Leah Herrboldt each had double-doubles, and Turkowski finished her triple double day with 16 kills, 66 assists and 15 digs.
The 1-1 road trip puts the team's record at 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the N.C.C., three wins behind first place North Dakota State. SCSU will now return home for a welcomed three-game home stand, welcoming the University Of North Dakota to Halenbeck Hall Oct. 10.
Four teams from the Division II top 25 list come from the N.C.C., and SCSU plays these four teams a total of eight times. While the SCSU schedule may be ridden with tough opponents, the squad has more than managed to keep its head above water to this point, and their record of 10-8 could look much better after their upcoming string of matches on their home floor.
